Castle Crashers $3.74 at Steam
« on: July 16, 2013, 01:20:18 pm »
Steam has Castle Crashers on sale for $3.74, DLC for $0.24 each.
http://store.steampowered.com/app/204360/

It has old school arcade hack 'n slash style gameplay for up to four players.

When it was originally released they built an arcade cabinet to promote it with 3D side art done by Nice Carvings.

Thanks for reminding me.  I need to pick that one up.

I know you can do online co-op, and local co-op, but do you know if you can do mixed local / online co-op?

I don't know about other versions, but on the PS3 you can do mixed local / online co-op...

Just played the game locally and answered my own question.  Its any mix of local / online players in co-op.  Which is pretty awesome.  I had a quick game of two local and one online.

This is only going to fuel my desire to build a four player cabinet..     :lol

They are still lugging that huge cab to all the shows, along with a bunch more cabinets they have built since then.

Wow, this game is annoying to setup for more than 1 player.

You either have to have hacked 360 controllers or you have to get a 360 controller emulator for it. Once it is setup it is a lot of fun though.

The growing trend for Windows based "arcade" style games is the use of gamepads.  Hence the reason I'm considering converting my cabinet over to Ultrasticks (http://ultimarc.com/ultrastik_info.html).  Another option would be to the use the A-Pac so your current joysticks show up as gamepads.

When I started this crazyiness, a lot of the emulators I was using at the time were keyboard driven - and joystick / gamepad support wasn't that great.  Today its just the opposite.  Everything I use supports gamepads.

And the Ultrasticks can be keyboard emulators too...  in the event you need one for something specific.  -I was wrong about this

Unless I am mistaken, that would only show up as one controller (if it even was recognized as an xbox one). Still same issue in this event, need to use a program to emulate the controllers. It isn't a big deal but is a pain in the ass to setup.

Cheers

The A-Pac or the Ultrasticks?

Each ultrastick is a "gamepad".  The A-Pac I thought was "two" gamepads, but I could be mistaken on that one.

How cabinet friendly is this game?  I'm wondering if the SF4 patch will work on it for the controllers if it has DirectX input.

Yup, works fine with the SF4 workaround.

Installed it on the cab yesterday and the gameplay is great on a cabinet, but there are more controls to map than I have buttons for.
I just mapped the main hack and slash buttons and played a quick game.

The Castle Crashers arcade cabs that were built for shows had 7 buttons, I have 7 buttons.
Anyone have this installed on their cab and can save me some time by posting which controls aren't really needed?

Finally got around to setting this up properly.
The control mapping in this game is screwey.

I used 2 x360kb virtual controllers thinking that would be the simplest route.
It worked, except that in the screen where others join in if P2 presses A, then two more characters join in instead of just one.
I remapped all the keys to one unused key to no avail.

This game has a weird thing where the first controller to press a button in a certain screen becomes P1 regardless of which controller they are using.  So if P2 presses a button, only their controls will navigate the menus until you go back into the main menu.

I ended up with P1 using the x360ce virtual controller and P2 using keyboard mappings.  (keyboard controls can only be used by one player)
It almost works right.  In the player selection screen, P1's joystick cycles through characters for both players and P2's joystick does nothing.  So P1 has to confirm their character, then move the joystick to highlight P2's desired character, then P2 presses A to select it.

I think it's as good as I'm going to get for now.  :-\

This game (and a few others on steam) have me considering either u360s or a-pacs for my cabinet.  Keyboard encoding just fails for newer stuff.

Most of them only work with xbox360 controllers though, so you'd still need a virtual one.
Wouldn't have to worry about changing the keyboard mappings in the game to avoid duplication though.

Analogs would be cool for the sports games.

The issue I'm having now is that I have my buttons labeled with AB on top and XY on the bottom.
For most games it doesn't matter, but for fighting games (which are important) it causes confusion in some games where it still displays the default keys instead of what it has been remapped to.  example: in MK Komplete menus and training, it will always show X for Front Punch regardless of what it's mapped to.  I could spend a few days on it learning how to use tools to swap the image files around to get the game to display it to match my buttons, but then all the move lists online use the xbox buttons.

EDIT:CORRECTION, THE GAME HAS BEEN UPDATED TO CORRECT THIS ISSUE.

For this cab, I like it the way it is, but if I ever do another modern style cab it will have the xbox layout and labels.

Xbox 360 controllers - like it actually looks for "Xbox 360 controller (peice of crap)"?

Because I haven't had one complain about my Logitech Gamepads yet (F310 and F710) - in XInput mode even.  I haven't tried most in DirectInput mode - mostly because I'm just too lazy to flip the switch.  If it works in X, I don't mess with it.

I know the A-Pac show up as "game pads" - I don't know about the u360s

Also don't forget to checkout Behemoth's latest game: BattleBlock Theater (http://www.battleblocktheater.com/media/#videos). Its mainly a platformer with 2P co-op gameplay, and various 4P arena gameplay modes. This game is just so much fun in co-op, especially since dying isn't an issue. So you are constantly trying to get your partner killed, in order to grab the gems first :)

I'm just going by people complaining in reviews that their controller isn't supported.
I have no idea what kind of gamepad they might have been trying.  Maybe it's an XInput thing.

Yeah Xbox 360 controllers were the only ones I could get to work with CCs. Any other controllers had their button layout setup way to different, and didn't see the options within the game to re-assign any controls. The family loves this game, so hopefully will not be too much of a chore to get it working in one of the cabs as I start the SW side of things.

XBox Live only.  If it hits Steam I'll take another look.  As an XBox exclusive - its worthless to me since I don't have an XBox (or any interest in putting a console system in my standup Arcade/MAME cabinet for that matter...)
