cabinet examples with lcd tv mounted on pole/pipes?
« on: July 14, 2013, 10:13:12 pm »
hey guys, a while back, someone on here made a pedestal style cabinet with an LCD tv mounted at the top of some pipe. it may have been a golden tee cabinet.  Does anyone know who did this cabinet and maybe have a link to the thread? Or any other similar setups?   i'm getting ready to build my pedestal cabinet with a wall mounted TV, but i'm considering mounting the tv on a pole attached to the cabinet instead of the wall...what do you guys recommend?

this is what i'm talking about...

i'm just curious what kind of pipe is used, how it is secured to the cabinet, and how the LCD is mounted to the pipe.  I know i saw a thread where someone built one of these, but just cant seem to find it.

SpaceHedgehog did Project Raptor where he mounted an LCD TV on pipes.

Unfortunately, his Photobucket account is currently over the allowed bandwidth.   :hissy:

PROTIP:  Everyone should upload their build photos to the BYOAC servers (after resizing/cropping) instead of using an external server to prevent this.    :soapbox:

There was also the "MAME on a Stick" build that used a metal welded frame.

IIRC, i sent an email or PM to "Jasonmm" with some pics i had.

EDIT: quick runthrough on my stand solution...

the stand itself is comprised of a piece of 1/4" steel plate (cut to 26 inches square(or however wide the cabinet was)) and a 4x4" square tube about 6 feet long.

this gives the bottom some weight to keep it stable and the cabinet butts right up to the post. the first cabinet we did, we welded the pole to the plate in the exact center. this caused the cabinet to sit very far away from the wall. later versions were off set back about 4" away from the rear edge. this gets the TV closer to the wall and eliminates "deadspace" behind it.

to mount the TV, we often just purchase a wall mount kit and bolt it directly to the pole. not a big deal. we try to find ones that have tabs or rods that can be locked /bolted in place so the monitors don't "walk" away. besides, the stand is about 200 lbs by itself. by the time you add the monitor and the cabinet, it's not going anywhere.

a few strategically placed holes to run the cables into the cabinet and a metal bracket to hold the cabinet to the stand and it's good to go.

thanks guys...

project raptor and jikkjack's golden tee where the ones i was thinking of.  I'm just really not sure which way to go.  I see jikkjack didn't actually mount the lcd to the pipe, they are just sitting there acting as a conduit for the wires...which may be the way i go.  I'd love to see some pics of that project raptor cabinet again to see how the monitor is mounted to the pipe.  I have several small children in the house, so whatever route i go, i need it to be sturdy so they don't knock it over.  I'm leaning more towards mounting the TV to the wall.  My woodworking skills are not that great, and I am intimidated enough by the though of building this from scratch.  I have had may cabinets over the years, but they were all purchased and then modified....this is my first scratch build.  I  had a 4 player showcase cabinet that i just sold because it took up too much space.  i want to build just the pedestal with a LCD tv to I can keep the 4 player mame action, but in about 1/3 the footprint. I have a 42" Vizio LED tv to use as the display.  It was in our living room, but I threw a breaker the other day while replacing an electrical outlet and somehow managed to blow out all of the HDMI ports on it. I got a new one to replace it, but the other inputs still work, including VGA, so it will be fine for the arcade
