Opti-Wiz and Happ 3" Trackball not working

I purchased an Opti-Wiz and a Happ 3" trackball recently and I cannot get it to work in Windows 7 and was wondering if anyone can help me.

Device manager is showing a single HID for the Opti-Wiz.

Each PCB is reading 2v on black-red. I do not get a voltage change on any of the wires when i move the trackball around.

Do the PCBs require more than 2v for operating? I used the Opti-wiz wiring harness to wire all of this up.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!.

Welcome aboard, 75756814.

The Pic of the OptiWiz looks like you've got it hooked up right, but you should have 5v between red (5v) and black. (ground)

Do you still have 2v between red and black on the OptiWiz harness when you unplug the trackball connector?

6 wires going to the trackball:
Red-- 5v (x2)
Black -- ground (x2)
Blue and Purple -- data pair for X axis (left pair in your OptiWiz pic)
Green and Yellow -- data pair for Y axis (center pair)

There should also be a green ground wire connected to the metal TB frame -- connect it to your frame ground to prevent static buildup.

Thanks for the response. I figured out the problem. It was a bad wiring harness i received with the Opti-Wiz. I wired everything up myself and it works great.

We test these out pretty well before we ship them, so I'm not sure what the issue could have been.  Regardless, make sure you contact us so we can figure out what happened with your situation.

We test these out pretty well before we ship them, so I'm not sure what the issue could have been.  Regardless, make sure you contact us so we can figure out what happened with your situation.

I was about to install my Opti-wiz and noticed the exact things that are above.. I have the adapter that is supposed to plug into the Optiwiz and it has 4 pins... there are a total of 6 connections coming off of it.. The boards on the Happ 3" trackball have 2 4pin Molex joined to one 8 pin molex... Where do the .187 terminals plug into since there are none on the trackball or its original harness ? ALSO, how do you obtain the power that it says is needed.. I thought the power was had through the USB plug?? I bought the Opti-Wiz because it said it was compatible with the Happ trackballs.. NO usable instructions came with it.. Not even a single video to show how to connect it...

That sounds like you got the mouse button cable.



One end of the mouse button cable has 4 pins in a row (0.1" Dupont female, connects to ground, L, M, R below the chip) and the other end has 0.187" female terminals for ground (the 3 daisy-chained connectors), Left, Middle, and Right mouse buttons.



The cable you need is the Trackball Cable for Opti-Wiz™ "No-Solder".

I'm not sure if you ordered the wrong cable or if Randy accidently shipped the wrong one.   

ALSO, how do you obtain the power that it says is needed.. I thought the power was had through the USB plug??

With the Trackball Cable for Opti-Wiz™ "No-Solder", you connect 5v (red wire) and ground (black wire) to the pins in the upper right corner of the pic above.

Data lines for X-axis (blue and purple wires) connect to pins A and B in the lower right corner of the pic above.

Data lines for Y-axis (green and yellow wires) connect to pins C and D in the lower right corner of the pic above.

If an axis is reversed (i.e. moving the trackball to the right moves the mouse cursor left), swap the data lines for that axis. (i.e. blue and purple wires)

I got the no solder version.. I guess I was under the impression that I could just plug it in directly to the 2 boards on the trackball and then plug in the USB to the PC and it would work.. I was was hoping to at the very least find a video or even pictures online of how to connect it to a happ trackball.. I am colour blind so I can't distinguish the different colours, so pictures of what wire goes where would have been helpful.. Is there a pre-made harness that can be purchased that would just plug into both boards on the Happ 3" trackball and then directly plug into the optiwiz ?

I was was hoping to at the very least find a video or even pictures online of how to connect it to a happ trackball.. I am colour blind so I can't distinguish the different colours, so pictures of what wire goes where would have been helpful..

Once you get the right cable, tape-flag-label the wires/connectors and post pics.

We'll help you connect the correct wires to the correct pins.

I bought the only cable option that showed up in the drop down menu when I purchased.. I will check the site again and see if there is another cable on GroovyGear site that will let me connect..

Yes.  The OptiWiz board connects 5v from the USB connector to the two "5v" output pins. (upper right)

The trackball adapter cable then connects the 5v from those pins to the optical circuits in your trackball.

Yes.  The OptiWiz board connects 5v from the USB connector to the two "5v" output pins. (upper right)

The trackball adapter cable then connects the 5v from those pins to the optical circuits in your trackball.

AWESOME !! I will give that a whirl when I get home.. I bet lots of people will want to see the easy way to connect to a trackball.. I doubt it could get any easier than that

I found that they were backwards when I hooked it up.. so all is great.. the trackball works in Windows.. It works in Hyperspin as well, I can move it around in hyperspin ( I enabled trackball in HyperHQ, I hope thats what I was supposed to do )

I tried to fire up Centipede and it won't move the guy.. I went into service mode and clicked on imput this game and I can't change the input from the joystick to mouse X Y ... is there an INI that I can edit that It will change this ? So that any game that is trackball enabled would use X and Y access ?

Do you have mouse enabled in mame.ini?

clicked on imput this game and I can't change the input from the joystick to mouse X Y

The up/down/left/right joystick entries are intended for digital (microswitch) not optical (mouse) inputs.

Once you enable mouse in mame.ini, the "Input (this Game)" menu should have "Track X Analog -- Mouse X" and "Track Y Analog -- Mouse Y" entries.

If those entries aren't in the menu, you may need to delete the centipede.ini file and launch the game again.

It's not needed for trackball games, but if you want, you can clear the "inc" and "dec" entries by highlighting them, pressing enter, and pressing ESC. (changes them to "none")

This is usually only needed for games where you use an analog joystick/Star Wars yoke/270 degree steering wheel/analog pedal.

I had to go into Mame64ui and enable mouse.. I tested a few games in mame while i was there and it worked well
