CD100B lighting question
« on: June 16, 2013, 06:07:33 pm »
I have a new to me CD100B. I just got it working with the HDD adapter from LittleShawn yesterday. Now I am working through some of the little things. This cabinet has multiple little light bulbs on the top of the upper door around the rotating cds, as well as behind diffuser shwooshes on the bottom door. None of these are lighting up for me. From what I understand these are on a rail system with positive on one side and negative on the other, so one burning out shouldn't put the rest out. I have trouble believing that all of them are burned out together. I have looked through the manuals that I received with my juke and did not find anything that was much help. The circuit diagrams for the lighting circuits are pretty slim. Is there a fuse somewhere I am not seeing? Anyone able to offer any help with this. All of the other lights and spinning do dads and such all work. Just all the mini bulbs not working. Any help is much appreciated.

Jimmi (new juke owner)

The CD-100 series uses # 73 miniature lamps. They are 12 volt bulbs, but in the CD-100 B they are wired series-parallel and connected to the 28 volts circuit through a dropping resistor. The resistor is mounted on a terminal block inside the amplifier compartment above the jukebox power transformer assembly. Sometimes that resistor will go open circuit and kill power to all the miniature lamps. It is also quite possible that all or most of the bulbs to be burned out. One bulb getting burned out will break the circuit to the next one wired to it.

Also, from my experiences over the years, these bulbs have very delicate filaments. So if you do find one that is still good, five minutes later it will burn out from being handled. What I do is automatically replace ALL the # 73 lamps at the same time with brand new ones. It saves a lot of headaches for sure. Oh, be very careful with the sockets. They are very delicate and get brittle with age. If the sockets break, it will break the circuit to the next lamp. The parts department of your local Rowe jukebox distributor stocks the sockets and bulbs.

If your sockets are good and you only need bulbs and need them right now, most auto parts stores stock the # 73 lamps. They are used as dashboard lights in some cars.

Okay,

I will try replacing them all as a first step. Thanks.

I had to replace every single one in a pair of jukes.  I think one had 2 or 3 still alive, but as mentioned as soon as I took them out and put back in, they were also dead.  I found the best deal on them from 1000bulbs.com at 3 bucks per 10 pack.  The fact that they ended being local was just an added bonus.

Pinball Life has that price beat by a mile, just $1.75 a box of 10.

my wife runs an auto repair shop, so I had her bring a dozen home tonight. Fixed the problem on the bottom left, the right did not come up, but I was in a hurry before coming to work.  She'll bring me more tomorrow and we'll see how it goes this weekend.

Thanks for the point in the right direction.

Hello Jimmi,

Those lamps should be 14 volt not 12 volt and on a number of sound to light units in the vinyl jukeboxes was the main cause of the units being burnt out by being overloaded by the use of the incorrect voltage/wattage lamp.

The industry has not been helped by some suppliers selling so called 14 volt lamps which when looked under a magnifing light are clearly marked at 12 volts! So as usual it is always buyer beware.

I was wondering about the math on that, series/paralell combinations on a 28volt system comes to every pair of bulbs 14v not 12v. I replaced them all with the #73 like was printed on the inside of the juke. The lights on the left half of the lower door all work now. No joy on the right.   ???. Up top around the animation, the center two work, and looking at the tracing they are a pair. The rest don't. I cleaned the tracings and made sure that all the bulb holders were good. Guess I'll have to break out the multi meter and see what's up from here. I might start looking for alternatives for the door. Maybe LED strips that can be fed into the diffusers? I'm not a purist and would be interested in some customization suggestions.

Hello Jimmi,

Only the animation lighting is 14 volt. If you have the CD-100B manual (volume 2 part number 21822618) the harness diagram is on 5-42/43

With regards to the 110/120 11 watt coloured lights in the jukebox check out the resistor assembly in the amplifier compartment (remember its mains).

I am working on the #73 bulbs that are behind the "swoosh" diffusers in the lower door, and the #73 bulbs that are up in the compartment with the rotating cds. These are all 14volt, no?

Hello Jimmi,

Sorry for the confusion, yes they are 14 volt lamps.

Still haven't gotten back to this project. Landscaping has been the order of the month. Will update when I get to it again.
