Atari cabaret plans?
« on: June 11, 2013, 12:39:48 pm »
Decided on a project I want to do this summer - saw a Centipede cabaret (though converted to Arkanoid) at my local arcade and love it. Planning a scratch build based on it.

Trouble is I can't find plans. Jakobud doesn't have 'em, and Googling turned up very little. Best I could find is this http://www.ggdb.com/GameByName.aspx?c=Coin-Op&s=Arcade&l=C&vid=503 which really only tells me overall height, width, and depth, and this thread with a rough sketch: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,120755.msg1281405.html

The plans in that thread are actually enough to go on, but alfonzotan says it's imprecise and I'm not even sure it's an Atari cabaret - looks like it could be a conversion, but might just be a scratch build based on it.

Anyone know where I can find plans for this? Or if anyone has one of these and wouldn't mind taking a few measurements for me, it'd be much appreciated.

That isn't a real Atari cabaret in the link. I had a Centipede cabaret in my game room for a long time and that isn't one.

The coin door is in the wrong place, there is no sign on the inside that huge Atari transformer and fuse assembly was ever there. No holes on the right side where the old stuff would have been mounted. No service panel on top of the coin box, and no holes where it used to have been.

DPTwiz on klov sells brand new CNC cut centipede cabaret cabs for $400 so the plans must be out there.

Does it have to be an "exact" replica? I experienced this same issue some time back and just decided that a 1/4" difference here or there really isn't that big a deal. Just wing it and make it look the best you can...

Good observations, I thought something seemed off about it. The people who made it were obviously inspired by that particular cab then.

Nah, I'm not going for an exact replica. I'm not gonna make it quite so deep for one thing, plus I plan to use a Midway coin door since I really like them and I have one. Probably not gonna theme it after an Atari game either.

But having said that, I really suck at winging stuff like this. I'd love to have a plan to look at for stuff like how high should the control panel be and how tall is the monitor area.

Have you looked at Gozer's sketchup collection.

He has an Atari Missile Command cabaret here and several other cabarets.

Some other guys made a Tempest, an Asteroids with sideart, and an Asteroids without sideart, but I'm not sure how accurate those are.   :dunno

Thanks PL1, the Tempest is the style I'm after. I figure I'll be able to come up with my own plans based on that. May even do a cardboard mock-up to see how it looks/feels just to be sure before I start cutting wood.

My best friend has both a Centipede and a Dig Dug cabaret (same as Tempest). If you want to do spot on I imagine he would be willing to trace out the side of one on a big piece of paper and send it to you for a few bucks.

Depends how much "a few bucks" is. ;)

A template would be sweet, though since I'm not too hung up on it being exact, I'm not willing to pay a lot for it. If you can get me a price though, I'd consider it.

If nothing else, I'd definitely be willing to paypal the guy $5 for his trouble if he'd just give me a few key measurements.

I don't think we ever got plans per se, but if you check out Haruman's stickied bartop thread in the Buy/Sell/Trade forum, there were some pictures with measurements given that would probably give you enough info to build one as long as you're not hung up on it being perfect. ;)

I think plans can be made from Google Sketchup files.

If so, here are a bunch, starting with a Donkey Kong cabaret :

We really need a "cabinet plans" forum here, a central location for all the plans made, found, or requested :)

There's already a wiki page for that here.   ;D

Correct. I took measurements of a centipede cabaret that was badly water damaged and still plan to rebuild. But the plans made from that are a CNC style build that are not a true 100% replica, if you want to get technical. They are Haruman's plans in case you wanted to ask him directly nicely. Otherwise, my measurement photos of the original cab should still be in that thread a few pages back. If not I'll dig up the photos or can take whatever additional measurements you need. I haven't tossed the old cab yet.

I still plan to get mine CNC cut, but it shouldn't be hard to get a copy made from those measurements. The main difference in the centipede and tempest cabs are the additional venting for the color vector tube in the back, and the panel behind the marquee was used for a light fixture in tempest, but not in centipede.

I don't know how to use sketch-up or CAD or any of that. Is there a recommended crash course ? Or maybe someone would make plans from sketch-up files for a few bucks each ?

I found 6 sketch-up files I'd like to have as plans :)

the DK cabaret sketchup is not accurate. AT ALL.
