MA Script Error when saving a game to Favorites List
« on: May 26, 2013, 05:10:34 pm »
Hi all.

I'm new to this forum (quite active on KLOV, Retrogaming RoundUp/GameGavel), but this seems to be the go to forum for Maximus Arcade questions, so hopefully someone here can help.

I'm running MAME 0.143 using (a registered/paid for) Maximus Arcade version 2.10 on a Windows XP Pro PC.

Everything works pretty well.  I have the controls mapped how I like, and MA seems fairly robust.  However, I can't seem to figure out what's causing this problem I'm having.  It's such an annoying problem that I've been trying out all sorts of other front ends, but I really want to use Maximus.

Here's the issue...

About 25% of the time, when I try to save a game to my favorites list, it works.

The other 75% of the time, Maximus Arcade responds with:

---------------------------
Director Player Error
---------------------------
Propery not found
#mylist
Script Error, Continue?
[Yes]     [No]
----------------------------

...after which point, MA no longer responds to joystick or button input.  I have to open the front of my MAME cab, click through the error message with my mouse, then use Task Manager to quite MA, then relaunch MA from the desktop.

Any ideas?

Wow, that sucks. I have no trouble saving games to Favorites. Did you google your specific error message? Seems to be a Windows registry error, not an MA problem:

Thanks for your reply.

The Google searching I did was the error + "Maximus Arcade", thinking the issue was specific to MA.

Weird that it works some of the time and not others.  I would think if it was a Director Player/Registry problem it simply wouldn't work at all.

I was thinking maybe it was a filename or directory issue.  So I moved MA to it's own directory in the root of C:, created a couple other Favorites lists, even changed the control panel button combination I use to save a favorite, but the problem still happened - although seemingly less than before.

I'll check out your link and do some more research about Director Player errors.

The official MA forums a littered with this error without resolve.
Here's one specific to your issue. http://maximusarcade.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=1946

You might want to check out your wiring, maybe a bad ground somewhere that is not enabling it to be held down long enough or to long.
Load up notepad and go through your combinations to see if anything is wrong, it might pay also to remap your button to a spare encoder input to rule that out.

Interesting.  Thank you for the suggestions.

I know the buttons and grounds are good - when I built the control panel I took the time to solder everything really well.  And just rechecked all the grounds with my meter - no problems there.

But I do use a 2 button combo to save a Favorite, since I didn't want someone playing to hit single button and save a random favorite by accident.

The other day I switched the button combo that I use, but continued to have the problem.  I'll do a test using a single button to save a Favorite and see if it makes any difference.

Cool, What's your encoder? Ipac? try physically mapping to a different input also, worth a shot.

I'm using the Ultimarc MiniPAC, since I wanted trackball and spinner support.  It's functionally the same as the I-PAC though.  I'll try your suggestions and report back.

Thanks.

I mapped the Save Favorite button to a single button (which is also on a different input on my encoder), and so far so good!  I haven't seen any more script errors.  I'm pretty sure it was simply "confused" by the 2 button combo I was using before.  I don't think there's anything wrong with my encoder, since all the controls work well otherwise.

Thanks for the help, guys!

Yep! And thanks again. It probably never would have occurred to me that it was the button combination that was causing this.
