Quick question... Newbie here...

What controls would you put on a control panel that was 25" wide and 12" tall?

I am new and am trying to determine how many buttons I am going to need for the 8 way? 4/6/7???

This board is great. I cant imagine trying to build a cab without this place!

Put as many controls as will fit and you can still play comfortably without interfering with other devices.  I'd suggest buidling a cardboard mock-up and then lay in your proposed hardware to see how it looks/fits.

As for buttons for the 8 way....  Depends on what you like to play, but i see most folks go for either the 6 or 7 button layout so that your fighting games are covered.

That's a hard question to answer without knowing what types of games you're wanting to play.

Are you a fighter type player, or more of an 80's classics games type player.

This is a small single player panel I built to play the older games, like Toobin, Defender, RipOff, StarCastle, Asteroids and many others (see the attached file).  The button layout gives me a lot of the old style control panel layouts, but allows me to play a lot of other classics.  But as you can see, it really isn't much of a fighter style layout.

Good luck with your project.
