Control Panel - how thick acrylic/polycarbonate?
« on: April 29, 2013, 04:56:53 pm »
Hello,
Although it (apparently) scratches easier I've read polycarbonate is much more forgiving when cutting/drilling than acrylic and I can get it for the same price.

The question I have is how thick, I can get 2mm (about 5/64) or 3mm (just under 1/8th) at the same price. I figure thinner is better for not lowing the height of the joystick too much but thicker is better as it's less likely to crack when cutting/drilling.

What thickness would anyone recommend and are my assumptions right?

Thanks.

I like 1/8" personally.  Coupled with 5/8" thick MDF and it makes a perfect height for 3/4" T-Molding around the edges.

Thickness will not effect cracking when drilling. If not drilled correctly thick material will crack just as easy. Polycarbonate is a softer material and is less likely to crack but it can grab and do some nasty damage.

I used 1.5mm for my CPO.

Check this link for how to drill it properly http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,119165.0.html

Thanks, 3/4 is not an issue as I'm using aluminium corners at 20mm to cover my control panel front. My joysticks will be top mounted on 3/4 MDF.

Selfie, Thanks I've already read your post - you didn't mention speed of drilling (some say fast, some slow). Actually while you're there which is better for 2 or 3mm polycarbonate -  cutting or snapping (it'll be a 660mm length and the edges will be hidden).

Thanks :)
