New to Compiling MAME. Need some help, please...

I want to try compiling my own MAME, in order to get rid of the nag screens for the ROMs.  I have the patches, files, and I followed Mr Do's page step by step.

However, once I put in the "makemame" command, the prompt always seems to have some kind of crazy error.

What am I doing wrong?  I'm completely new to this compiling business, and I'd appreciate some help if I can get it.
