Cropped Large Format TV possible?
« on: April 21, 2013, 04:38:07 pm »
First allow me to introduce myself as this is my first post.  I have been lurking here for years.  My wife and I are about to buy a house in the Seattle area and for the first time in my life I'll have a garage to work in, and a home big enough to have an arcade cabinet.  I'd like to do an upright cabinet this year and have really been inspired by the work a lot of you are doing.  I hope this isn't terribly redundant, but I couldn't seem to find the answer to this question:

Has anyone put a large format TV into a cabinet in portrait mode, cropping the top and bottom, in order to maximize screen size in both horizontal or vertical games?

The top of the screen would be up in the marquee, and the bottom will be down behind the controls. I was really inspired by some of the builds with rotating displays, but it requires making the cabinet really wide.  The attached picture gives you an idea of the question with orange for horizontal and red for vertical games.

Thanks for any replies.

I am very interested i this topic as well as I want to use the exact same method as OP described.  I finally got myself a gutted Midway 'fighter' cabinet and I have a 40" I am thinking about putting in.  Overkill, sure - but someone gave it to me because it didn't work, and well, now it does!

are you asking if MAME will leave black bars on the top and bottom?  If so, then yes.
