Happ Competition Pro. They're a bit crap
« on: April 18, 2013, 03:32:08 pm »
Hello,
All my parts have arrive  :D
(http://negnegneg.blogspot.com).

I really wanted to buy Sanwa buttons but I'm using 18mm (3/4) mdf and feared routing too deep might cause the mdf to be too weak. So I bought competition pro's (convex as that's the style I wanted) instead. For my side pinball and coin/control buttons that I wasn't bothered about I bought some cheap IL buttons.

In comparison the IL's are so much better.

My issue with the Happ is there is so much play between the plunger and the surround it's unreal, there must be 1.5 to 2mm and when you press you get a slight sideways wobble as well.

Why didn't anyone tell me Happ are so crap  :'( I'll know for next time and won't be recommending these to anyone.

On the plus side, I think I bought good with the LS-32's, they're just lovely  :applaud:

though my only minor worry is you can't screw the ball top tight, it just goes to the end then spins on it's own. I'd have preferred it to be tight.

I've really become fond of the goldleaf buttons from ultimarc.

And the bottom of the joystick shaft has a slot for a screwdriver to tighten the ball. A small dab of purple loctite isn't a bad idea.

good day.

Thanks for the tip, I'll try it out :)

oh, the u-track has a lovely motion too, very smooth. A bit of noise, but that's to be expected.

Can't wait to get it lit up. I can't believe the suppliers are charging so much for the LED block, I've made one for < $2 in a matter of minutes.

Thats what I have (ultimarc goldleaf). I don't have a cabinet to install them yet, but they feel like top notch. Plus, I have to hold them right up to my ear to hear them click.

They don't do convex buttons, and besides I'm from UK so have to make do with what I'm given  ;)

Do you not find the gold leaf ones too 'dead', seems to me like they make no sound, not much press action and require hardly any force to contact.

Hmm interesting. I quite like the happ competition buttons. I also have sanwa buttons on another machine and I like those too. The price of the sanwa buttons is substantially higher and even though the buttons are arguably better they aren't that much better that I would suggest changing what you already have. But again I never had a problem with my competition buttons, they always felt nice to me.

The Asian flat buttons in my candy (not sure whether they're Sanwa or Seimitsu) are ---smurfing--- fabulous. They're made for metal cps, but I'd find a way to put them in wood, if I were building something.

I think I'd better take some of that criticism back   :dizzy:

I've got my control panel completed and they feel nice, if loose. Glad I bought convex anyway, I've got concave ones for the coin/player start buttons and they don't feel as immediate or have the ability to move the hand across them as with the convex.

btw, I've got my trackball lit up with red but was planning on yellow (I had red led's lying around). What does anyone think, red or yellow? :)
