Questions about the power connector on the PacLED64
« on: April 10, 2013, 11:53:41 pm »
As the title states, I have some questions....

1) What is the correct name of that type of connector?
2) what is the size of that connector?

I am looking to make a panel mount for that connector so that I can use the plug that came with the PacLED64 to connect from the computer to the panel mount, and then get another shorter wire from the panel mount to the PacLED64.

I have two PacLED64's...

3) can I make a panel mount that would allow me to connect to one of the 5v lines of the computer, and then split into two connectors  at the panel mount, so that I can power both PacLED's, or do they both need their own 5v line from the pc?

4) Instead of me making this panel mount, does anyone know of any place that already makes these panel mounts that I can just order?

Are you talking about this one?

If so, that's commonly referred to as a "Disk drive connector (Molex 8981 Series Power Connector)".

Or this one?

Which is just a DC Power connector. As far as what size yours is, bust our your calipers.

3) Yes. Wire is wire. It's purpose, complete a path from source voltage to ground.

4) Don't know. Just use whatever connectors you're familiar with. Wire is wire. As long as you complete the path...

I was referring to the bottom picture.

I think I asked question 3 wrong...What I want to know is if the voltage that comes from one of the pc's molex connectors is enough to power two pacled64's that are fully loaded?

Should be. If you look closely at your harness on your power supply, you'll notice that many of those drive connectors are daisy chained, which is essentially using the "same wire" to power all those conncectors. Some power supplies do have separate rails though. On the Beast I've got my 2 PACLED64s connected to 2 molex drive connectors (5V) that are daisy chained with each other (so basically the same wire). I'm running a total of 19 RGB LEDs and 2 single color (white) LEDs on each PACLED64, which uses a total of 59 of the 64 outputs on each PACLED64.

Edit: It's not the voltage coming from the connector that you should be worried about being enough, it's the amperage. But yes, it should be enough for 2 PACLED64s fully loaded.
