K'zoo auction prices - 11/8/03
« on: November 08, 2003, 07:13:36 pm »
Quite a few games here, lots of junk, but a few nice dedicated machines. No MAME cabs that I saw.  There was a nice Satan's Hollow mini that opened up the arcade machine bids.  Pretty decent shape and working, it went for $150.

The prices seemed a little on the low side, I was a bit surprised being it's the last Super Auctions event before Christmas.  I only marked down prices for a few of the nicer games that I was interested in.

$475 - Galaxian, nice
800 - MsPac, probably the nicest classic there
400 - Pac-Man Plus, old Pac cabinet, pretty decent
500 - Pac-Man in a nice cab
625 - Donkey Kong
550 - Centipede, cab was complete but pretty dirty
375 - Blasteroids, nice
275 - Mr. Do, decent shape
185 - Pole Position, clean upright cab but it had a ram error (naturally)
850 - Revolution X, very nice
675 - JP Lost World, nice cab w/ a plywood marquee!  :)
575 - Area51
475? - Return of the Jedi, dedicated, decent shape

Other interesting cabs that I didn't get the prices for:
Turbo mini, needed a lot of work, pretty rough shape
Scramble cocktail, nice but dirty
Mappy cocktail, needed a new underlay, cab in okay shape
Space Invaders II cocktail, decent

NO vectors, Galagas, or Williams cabs.

Do Rag was there jacking up the prices a bit.  Many of the games would have probably gone $100 cheaper if he wasn't there.  Some people started grumbling about him, so the auctioneer halted the auction to announce that Do Rag was an operator that helped Super Auctions get the machines running, and he paid as much for the cabs he won as everyone else.  However I never saw him actually "win" a cab...   :P

I bolted before they got to all the junk conversions, generic jammas, and pins.

i guess anyone can bid what they want and if he won he'd be stuck with it. but perhaps if he ever got stuck with a cab, he'd sell it back afterwards since obviously he wasn't fixing up cabs to be nice right? so auction company pays him money to "fix" up machines. i guess he knows their true condition and what they are worth to him though. i understand people getting upset though.

the deal with do rag, is that he's shilling his own games. he already owns them, he's not trying to buy much of anything. all he's doing is driving the price up so he'll make more money. i've seen him bid on stuff that i believe is not his, but it's rare(and then only on parts).
each game at the auction has a little sticker with a # on it. this should have a check or a line on it somewhere. typically the check means the game was working, a line means it was doa(this was the case at the last auction i was at, although the others i've been to didn't have this"code", and not all games have either mark).  now if the sticker has a check with a line underneath, it's a do rag machine. the mark of the beast, if you will.
now he's getting wise to collectors knowing his m.o., so i think he might be changing tactics a bit, ie. not using his mark and enlisting other shill bidders. as a rule, watch out for guys bidding on tons of games(especially if they are bunched together) and if you see him bidding, stay away from the item.
this web page has a write up on this dr, as well as some pics, so you know what to watch out for.

here

do rag isn't the only culprit either, i've also seen sa employee's bidding on games. they weren't blatently shilling like dr, but i have my suspicions. there's other people doing this as well, hell, sa encourages it over reserve  prices(i've seen this first hand).

moral of the story, be carefull and keep you eye out for odd bidding behavior.

Yeah, I've been keen to Do Rag for a while...  It was pretty obvious that he was bidding on his own games and how he never actually "won" anything.  I'm sure other people were picking up on that too, and that's why the auctioneer felt it necessary to mention something about it.

I think they may have changed up the check/line thing, too.   Most of the games had a line through the tag and they worked just fine.  There were more than a couple games that didn't fire up and Do Rag would tell the auctioneer that is was just a bad power supply, and the auctioneer would promptly start to call out during the bidding  "Just a bad power supply, you can buy these for $15 and have a nice working game."

There was one guy there bidding on nearly everything that came up, and being a bit suspicious I figured he was shilling, too.  However, I saw him later load up a trailer (with an aracde business logo on the side) full games he had won.  I suppose he could have been "buying" back his own games, though...

As mentioned, just be careful you don't overbid for something at an auction.  As a general rule, it helps to go to a couple auctions to see how they are run and know when to buy before purchasing.  And also keep in mind the 13% commission tack-on and sales tax after the winning bid price.

I tend not to go to auctions at all.  I just buy working games from the local arcade at the mall which are always priced extremely low  ;D  The operator (super nice guy) puts up every machine for sell during December ... even games that are less than a month old ... he rocks!  He certainly makes eBay the joke it is  ;)

Is that really him? How many guys can pull off a half open sweatshirt? I thinks its the chest hair that allows him to pull it off.

Here's a pic I took of him at the Mesquite Super Auction back in March.

He's looks like Super Mario, except dirty.  The funny thing is, I didn't even know there was such a person as "Do Rag" until after I got back from this auction.  I just thought the guy was funny-looking!   :D

I doubt he makes it to the West Coast. He wasn't at the last one, there seemed to be a clone of him who was buying a crap load of games though.
