Something interesting to do with hdd/msg front panel leds
« on: March 14, 2013, 07:06:26 am »
I built a terribly dodgy cabinet a few years ago, have decided to fix it up nice.  At the time I couldn't think of what to do with the HD and MSG (system power S0-S5 status) LEDs from the front panel connectors, so I just wired them up to the back so they would shine on the wall behind the cabinet.   You can see in the below picture the 2 small holes above the top fan exhaust vent.  Now I'm thinking this is stupid (yes "now".. also have just moved to a place where it doesn't show up so good).  Need some ideas. (I already have the power led connected to a power on/off button on the front near coin slot. I have a hidden admin panel with usb ports etc under the control panel, that I could put.. "something".. that makes use of these spare leds.  Any idea than what I already have would be good really.

That's from a user on here, unfortunately I don't know who. You could also build a control panel with some plexi under the buttons, get some artwork printed on backlight material, and put them underneath that. That's what I'm doing for my machine.

I like backlit artwork on the control panel the best.  We're only taking two LED's right?  Not a strip?

Yeah, just the 2 individual LEDs from the motherboard front panel header.. not 5/12v powered.  So not usable as 'lighting' as such.  I am thinking of something control panel related (e.g. underneath artwork to light up a characters eyes or something).
