Found - Deal on Hardwood Plywood
« on: November 07, 2003, 03:37:37 pm »
I was just up at Home Depot checking out the power tools and browsing through the plywood when I noticed they had a few bundles of  4'x8' sheets of Maple/Birch Plywood for only 29.79 each..  Currently the the best deal I have seen is about $40-$42 a sheet.

FYI

Nah mdf is much heavier.  Buy as many sheets as you can fit in your truck.  where are you - state?  I would like to get my hands on some maple veneer ply for that price.

If you're in the upper midwest and have a Menards, they beat Lowes and Home Depot's prices by far, and if they have a sale they're really good. However they've never been lower than $29.99 for those.

Their typical sale prices are this:
1/2" MDF: $12.99
3/4" MDF: $16.99
3/4" Red Oak laminate MDF (2 sides): $32.99
3/4" Red Oak laminate Plywood (2 sides): $31.99
3/4" Birch laminate MDF (2 sides): $31.99
3/4" Birch laminate Plywood (2 sides): $30.99
3/4" Maple laminate Plywood (2 sides): $35.99 (I think.. don't pay too much attention)

Lowes wants $48 for laminated MDF or Plywood, and > $24 for plain MDF around here. HD is a bit lower but doesn't carry as much selection.

Menards is the place to go for lamined plywood, laminated MDF or plain MDF if you have them.

Plus their plain MDF sheets are 49x97 (1" extra per side--great if you need that 'little extra'). The others are 48x96.

I'm In St. Louis, Missouri.   I would call the nearest Home Depot, when I aksed the guy he said it was a Special Purchase and they should have that at all HD stores.  He might have meant only the St. Louis stores, but it doesn't hurt to call and check if your in another state.

And yes MDF is heavier, I carried three sheets by myself into my basement and was sore for a few days.

I think MDF is about 105 # a sheet and plywood is about 93 # per sheet. Close but still every bit extra hurts more :(  Of course this depends on the size. Some sheets have an extra 1" on both sides, meaning 3.2% more weight.

The best I've been able to do is to price match Lowe's against Home Depot.
Lowe's will give it to you for 10% less than the Home Depot cost.

I saw that same price yesterday, and thought it was just a wrong placed price tag. :)

With the wood prices in US having doubled or so over the last year or so, $30 now is a very good price. (at least in west coast AFAIK)

The price of wood is going back down... I bought some various stuff over the summer and was amazed at the price.  For the record this does not include boards, just plywood and other sheeting.  Ironically 2x4's and other construction materials are going up.

FYI: I saw that same price at HD on the same wood.  Must be a surplus comming from somewhere on the maple.  I am in Altanta.

Just checked here in Salt Lake - same deal $29.79  :-)

What would be the best way to hide the ugly edges though? I am thinking of staining it natural so t-molding will probably look stupid. I have seen people post that use pine strips on the edges, but I would like rounder corners.

Any ideas?

I use the adhesive backed laminate (oak, since I use oak plywood) for my edges.
If you want rounder edges with the look of wood you could take a piece of lumber (whatever matches your plywood) and rip the width to the exact thickness of your plywood.
I'd probably plane the thickness down to just over 1/2 inch before hand.  If you do, make sure you plane the piece before you rip it and have the piece wide enough to get all the needed pieces from it.  That way all your edging will match and be the exact same thickness.
Then use a round over bit on the router table to curve both sides, meeting in the center.
Cut it to length, glue it, and brad it.

or you could buy 3/4" (or whatever thickness you get) pre cut bullnose--just glue it in, clamp and stain--its a little lighter than the birch veneer plywood but an extra coat of stain before you glue the pieces together would cure that.  heres the edge of the desk i built...

I used to have a stained plywood cabinet with black t-molding, it looked great, wasn't weird looking at all.

Yep, love that Menard's. Usually their regular prices beat HD's sale prices. The Menard's parking lot is always packed, while HD's has only a few vehicles. I suspect Menard's will be dropping their prices to something cheaper.

But still that is a great price. When I see prices like that, I pick up extra for future projects.

I'm killing myself.

I went up to Home Depot today.  They had 6 sheets left at the amazing low price of $20 each.  Was going to buy all 6 and make 2 Machines out of it and Sell one, I didn't have a car to get it though...wouldn't fit on my Civic.

Went home, got the Minivan and by the time I got back to home Depot, all six sheets were sold!   :-[ :'( :'(

It's over for me.

You should have put a hold on them, loaded them on a cart and pulled it up to the pro desk and told them you'd be right back.

I went there on Friday on they had about 15 sheets, of which I bought 3.  You should have called me Matt, I would have run over with my blazer and we could have got at least 3 if not all six on my roof rack.

Also try going to one of the other home depots, one of them has to have a few sheets left somewhere.

On a side note, the stuff is nice, but if its cabinet grade, its on the low end of the scale.  It will still be nicer to use than MDF and is a lot lighter. :)
