Super/Ms./Pac-Man mini size???
« on: November 06, 2003, 07:04:50 pm »
Played on a Super Pac-Man mini today and loved the size. Anyone know what the scale of the mini is? (the arcade mini, not the kid-size one people have built on here.)

And is everything in the design just exactly scaled down fromt the original?

Would love to see some plans for one of these...

Nope, the dimensions and design of the Midway mini is totally unrelated to the upright. And also, as far as I know there was never a dedicated Super-Pac mini, so you were probably playing a conversion. And if it was a conversion, then it might not have been a midway cabinet at all.

It was a super pac-man mini, and I felt confident it was dedicated because I could see through the grate on the top left in back and could see the original sticker that said SUPRPAC or something to that effect. They wanted $600 for it. Cigarette burns on the control panel, bad monitor burn, otherwise cool unit. If it wouldn't be a crime to buy it and mame it, I would. But I don't want to spend the rest of my life running from you guys, looking over my shoulder all the time and fearing for my life... lol

do you think they used 3/4" or 5/8 on the mini cab?

Probably 3/4". Like only Nintendo cabs seem to be 5/8"

Although that is one of those things that really doesn't matter. You wouldn't even be able to tell the difference between one made with 3/4" and one made with 5/8" unless you were looking for it.

I must say that it would be pretty stupid to Mame any $600 cabinet.

I might be in luck. I called the local amusement/vending company and they said they may have "several" mini/cabaret units that could be parted out to sell the cab.

Now I just have to wait 1-2 weeks for them to get around to going through their warehouse. In the meantime, I'm setting my sights on original pacman cabaret, bezels and marques... :)

And we're off...

You must be talking about that mini at FamilyRec (next to the cocktail one on the north wall in back if they still have that for $600).

$600 for a SPmini is a little spendy IMHO.  Especially since IIRC almost all of the paint on the marquee had been burned off and you could see all the lightbulbs behind it, and the overlay was trashed. It didn't even work when I was in a while ago (only the cocktail worked).

This same place wants $1100 for a hacked Pac upright.. Heck I can get better ones for $600-$750 plus $150-$200 shipping from eBay!

I've never been impressed with what they have to offer. They have the occassional gem but most of their stuff they never sell, pull it off then bring it back out later.  That Silkworm for $250? with blurry and color missing monitor has been there for the last 2 1/2 years, and one of the 2 Tetris's $350? for easily a year and a half.   They used to have Pac's for $700-$800 now want $1100 for a Pac, Galaga or Mspac, regardless of condition (most often in very poor condition). They obiously think they can get it..

As far as if it's original... The upgrade kit included the FCC sticker and what not.  Most were conversions from Ms.Pac's or other Midway MiniMites (their name for their cabaret cabinets).  So it could have been a Gorf, Wizard of Wor, Ms.Pac or something in it's earlier life. (I'd have to check closer to be sure as most of their mini's had a specific minor difference to let you know which was which).

Rumor is however that SOME SuperPac Minis were factory conversions..  Again conversion.. if they didn't sell enough of another mini, they converted it before it went out to retailers.  I think the concensus is that there are no "real" original mini SuperPacs. They were all conversions, either at the factory or at the operator.

Funny you should mention the upright super pac not working, because I was in there the other day and the player one joystick on the cocktail super pac had a leaf switch that didn't work at all and the upright was fine.

I love the feel of the mini cabs. I'm gonna mame one. Just gotta get my hands on something that's out of commission.

Just out of curiosity, you wouldn't happen to be a guru on the subject of monitors, would you? A monitor guy right here in this god forsaken town??

I actually started building a Midway MiniMyte cabinet myself. Have both sides done and stained and poly'd. (Real red-oak laminated MDF).  Have to build the cross pieces now.  I modeled it after a Satan's Hollow mini which is virtually identical to the Wizard Of Wor and Kickman ones.  I'm going to put Kickman into it when I'm done.

You could build a mini cab for a whole lot less than FR/UM wants for their stuff.

I'm building 2 mini's, and I think the Midway one will end up costing about $50 in wood and stain/poly and I built a Centipede mini and that cost about the same.  Granted I scored a few good deals on 1/2 MDF for cross pieces at Menards, so not looking/waiting for best sales prices I know you could build a replica for under $80 really easily.  Of course you need:
- Jig Saw and blades
- Drill and bits
- Router
- 1/4", 1/2" and t-molding Router bits
- Random orbital sander and sanding discs
- Screws
- Square
- clamps
- hole saw blade kit.
- plywood polyurathane glue and caulk gun

But that's all that pretty much was used to build the frames on both of them.

mush,
thought i'd chip in with some pricing info. at the last auction i attended several complete yet non working mini's were sold for under $100. two of which were pac mini's(both working quiz games), one went for $30(i should be punched for missing this one), and the other for $60, 2 turbo mini's $50 each, and an omega race went for $70ish. there were a few others as well, but they went for over $100(including a battlezone and space invaders).  and then a few others that were working but i didn't even bother paying attention to(pac, si, and 1942 in pac cab). this auction had more mini's than most but there is usually a few at least.
if that vendor either drags his feet, or tries to charge too much, there are other options.

crs and guru,

I appreciate the perspective. It'll definitely help save me some trouble if he calls and tells me he wants $200 for an empty cab.

Though, that's the thing that sucks about being where I live: aside from build-your-own, there are like 2 options for buying a cab from someone. Buying on e-bay is fine, but shipping on these things destroys any kind of good deal you might find. The shipping rules out getting any cab for cheap if it's not close enough to drive to...

Anyone know where I can find a cabinet in Minneapolis? Anyone had any luck there? I'll be there again in a couple of weeks.
