Sound is choppy, MAME 0.147 with ROMs 1.47
« on: March 05, 2013, 11:20:03 pm »
Sorry if this has been addressed before, the links I checked do not follow to a resolution.

ROMs are version 1.47

Got MAME 0.147 and MAla to run, but the sound is choppy/repeats.  I made changes in the MAME.ini folder already, changing the sound sample from 48k to 22K, no improvement.  Vector games and raster games seem to run at normal speed, except battlezone, the game seems to run more slow than the real deal.  The sound is choppy on any game.
The sound is fine on this computer if playing a CD.

Computer is running XP, Pentium 3, with 1 gig RAM.

Anybody resolved this before?

I have noticed this as well. I am using MAME 0.147u1 and seeing similar issues.  I haven't looked into it yet because I am in the building stages of my cabinet. I just loaded this on there to do some simple testing. I know MAME is at at least version 0.148 so hopefully it has been addressed.

Thanks cmoses.

Please post if you have further updates or find it really is an issue with 0.147.

What version ROMs are you using, and is your computer faster than a Pentium 3?

Is there any way to get the word out to find out for sure from other uses if it is 0.147?  Should I post this on the "software" part of the forum?  How can we reach the main target users best?

I am using a Pentium 4 2.0ghz CPU with 2gb of ram and running windows xp 32 bit. I have 0.147u1 MAME and the same ROMs.

As far as the issue, I haven't really looked into it. I would search through Google, check and see if Mamedev.org shows anything on it. I think there was 4 updates on 147. So it could have come in one of those updates or maybe not until 148.

Once it all the hardware done I will be getting the newest MAME and rom set so to lock in the build.

I will try to do some looking tomorrow Nd see if I can find anything on the issue. I will let you know what I find. I am using the onboard audio from my Asus MB. So that could be causing the issue

not likely to be a MaLa issue.  P3? time to "upgrade" to at least a P4 2.8
If you're replying to a troll you are part of the problem.
I also need to follow this advice. Ignore or report, don't reply.

I did a search today and found a couple of threads mentioning the refresh rate that the game is running at can cause audio issues if it is not the same as the game is intended to run at. The refresh rate is controlled by the monitor refresh rate.

I thought about this and it makes sense. I did not recall having any sound problems when I first loaded everything up. Recently I have been testing the mini SLG and it recommends running at 640x480@60hz. I set this resolution in the MAME.ini file.

I have not had a chance to test this but by forcing it to run at 60hz it may be causing the sound to fall out of sync. I hope to test this on my machine this weekend. Check and see if you are running at a specific refresh rate. I think the preferred setting is for 'auto' in MAME.ini.

I am using a 15" 4:3 LCD monitor to test with.  I will try your recommendation, thanks.

I posted this issue on the "software" forum, and had no responses, so I asked if "anyone is not having choppy sound with 0.147.  I am getting the software ironed out before moving on to the arcade controls and making my enterpretation of what a home MAME "cabinet" could be.

The resolution was set to "AUTO".  Also tried various settings for sound latency without any further improvement, it was set to "2".
I loaded MAME and MaLa on my other computer, AMD Athlon XP 1800+ CPU, with a couple of ROMS, this load put in like 26,000 titles to plow through, I don't think catver loaded, if that is what whitles it all down to just the titles with ROMs loaded.  Still need to run it to see if the sound is OK on this computer.
