Opti-Pac Mouse Button Question.
« on: March 01, 2013, 01:52:59 pm »
I have a U-Trak track ball going through a Opti-Pac for my mouse and game control.  I also connected two buttons at the top of my panel to the Opti-Pac for Left and Right mouse buttons, these are also connected to Pause and Enter on my I-Pac, they are grounded to the I-Pac only.  They work fine most of the time like when i double click to startup MameWah or whatever, but randomly when I'm in windows if i click the left button to apply or click OK, or try to change tabs it will make whatever window I'm in vanish.  Also when i go to the start menu and click shut down, if i use the mouse buttons it goes into stand by mode.  If i do the exact same thing but use a real mouse it goes ahead and shuts down.  Any ideas?

2 buttons on dual controllers sharing a single ground?  Prob not a good idea.  Basically, you're sending 2 keys to the PC (via USB) and creating a key sequence that may vary based on latency in the USB hub (internal).  Look into shifted keys on your i-Pac for things like esc or pause, then you can have the mouse independent on the CP.  Likewise, you can program buttons on the i-Pac to be either player1-button1 OR mouse1.  Something like that...

I thought it might be a issue with the ground but i emailed Ultimarc and he said it would work.  It works for the button press's but it could be an issue with the mouse clicks.

Ill try isolating the mouse buttons and move the Enter and Pause to Tab for the moment see if that fixes it.

Yeah.  I don't think it's an electrical problem, just that you're actually sending a signal from 2 encoders at once and it may be confusing to the USB bus, especially if they're coming into the same USB ID.

My IPAC is PS/2 but my Opti is USB.  Might be some of the issue with it being confused.

You might try using signal diodes for isolation as the 2 controllers are being connected in a slightly different manner than usual.  You night be able to get away with proper connections using the signal diodes for blocking.
