  • I want to build my own arcade controls!
I have a GPwiz 40 and player one and all the buttons are great and working fine, but player two is not working at all

both P1 and P2 are responsive when testing in windows but p2 is not working in HS.  Anyone have an idea of what might be happening?

Also, how do i test p2 joystick?  P1 has a x y axis so i know if i screwed up the wiring, but with p2 i do not know if im backwards or upside down.

It's because HS requires a seperate joystick ID for P2. The GPWiz shows up as 1 joystick device to the computer. I wish HS would handle joysticks/gamepads better, but right now it doesn't.

If you follow the "Common Use" descriptions shown in the documentation, you will be fine.  The only thing you need to remember is that when you press up on the joystick, the switch in the opposite direction is the one which is pressed by the joystick actuator.  P2 uses the R and Z axis, so it really doesn't matter anyway.  You'll need to define these in your applications mapping, so whichever way you have them wired will be correct once you do this.

Thanks randy, however, it looks like HS wont see it as two players, only one.  which is a big problem for me.  How do i fix this?

Or JoyToKey, or RBjoy, which are free.  You should only use these types of converter applications when the main application doesn't have full joystick support built in.  They shouldn't be used with applications like MAME, or others which will work fine without them.

so wait, they should not be used with mame?  thats the point of my machine.

What about Maximus arcade, does that front end have that kind of support?

I have P1 and P2 Start and Coin set up too, i wish i had known that HS does not have that kind of support

You misunderstand.  The GP-Wiz works excellent with MAME, and pretty much everything else.  It's only an oddball application here and there with limited gamepad/joystick support which requires the extra converter applications.  Those extra applications shouldn't be activated when using an app with proper gamepad/joystick support, as they properly interact with the hardware natively.

I understand your point there, but when i start a game from HS that uses mame, should the mame control config take over and see the p1 and p2 gp wiz set up?  because its not, and its kinda frustrating

This is from the MAME documentation;

Quote
-[no]joystick / -[no]joy

Controls whether or not MAME makes use of joystick/gamepad controllers.
When this is enabled, MAME will ask DirectInput about which
controllers are connected. The default is OFF (-nojoystick).

Do you have it enabled?  If not, it needs to be.

where can i find that option in mamext64?

Options:Default Game Options:Controller Mapping?

Probably best asked in a forum or chat room dedicated to that particular build.
