Which is better to connect component to tv
« on: February 19, 2013, 10:57:48 pm »
I have a x1950 pro and x600(which i bought for a k7400 monitor i wont be using :(" The x600 has a odd dms-59 end which i had to buy a adapter to dual vga for so i most likely save till i find a working 25" monitor. So i most likely be using the x1950 or buying another card. The x1950 came with a s video to component adapter which i will have to find or re buy. Or i could buy the dvi to component adapter mono price sells plus a video card off ebay that will work with it if the x1950 doesn't. The tv i bought was a kv-24fv300 and has component in and auto return and is 24" not quite 25 but at least not 27" lol. Which adapter would give the best looking video to the tv and setup or are they both the same?

I'm 97.3% sure that those plug-only vga-rca converters don't work.

You need a box - like this.

Both are putting out the same signal, so same quality.
Just make sure your video card is capable of putting out the correct signal and those adapters are wired correctly for it.
Really you should only use an adapter that the card came with originally.

It sounds like you understand how they work, but for those who might not:
Those things don't convert the signal, they just add a different connector type to your video card.
Just because the cable plugs in doesn't mean that the TV can make sense of the signal being sent to it.
Your video card will have to be set to output the correct type of signal for the TV.
This is done in the video card's software.
If the video card isn't sending the right type of output, it will be like trying to pick up an FM station with an AM radio.

Much better to do it this way than use a converter box that can add delay and other problems.
I run my old setup over S-video.  It looks doesn't look nearly as good as when using component (using the s-vid connector pigtail),
but I have s-vid light guns, so have to stick to s-vid.

I know the x1950 does component out, didn't think the quality would be different but wanted to ask. I prefer to use a 25" arcade monitor but till i find one i try make due with my 24" tv.
Thanks
Just for people who want to know the dvi to component works with radeon 9500-9800 series and All-In-Wonder 8500/8500dv. Most can be found on ebay for around $20

Is that card compatible with soft15khz?  Is the component output capable of low resolutions?  You have to feed that TV 15kHz resolutions or you won't get any picture (same as with a 15kHz arcade monitor).

Benarcade, you shouldn't recommend that box.  It's a scaler, so no good for native res.  Anyhow, the minimum output resolution looks like 480p, so it won't work at all with that TV.

That TV is capable of displaying real 15kHz arcade resolutions around 240p (native res for 90% of games in MAME) if set up properly.  Check the link in my sig.

I have not tried it yet just found my cable today. But reading the soft15khz there was a few people who said the x1950 worked with the right drivers.

Please let me know if you can get the component out working with custom 15kHz progressive resolutions.  It would be nice to be able to recommend a card that can do that.

Well i ran into another problem. My pc i was going to use was a p4 3.2 and the x1950 which is a agp card. I was offered a free e7500 2.9 duo cpu/mobo/memory so i took it. The new mobo is pci e so my card wont work. And i prefer to use the e7500 so i can run hyperspin which i already have setup for my other cabinet and my media pc. So is there a preferred card to use or just get a rgb to component transcoder(if so what are also preferred)?

I don't know of a component-out card that's confirmed to work with low-res custom resolutions.  Supposedly they exist, but no one's been able to confirm with a model number.  So, I'd recommend the VGA to component transcoder route.

I've been using a GeForce 7300GS, which is great for Soft15kHz + Powerstrip.  With the new GroovyMAME with custom modelines coming out, I'll be switching to over to a Radeon using CRT Emudriver instead of Soft15kHz.  I picked up a Radeon HD4350 recently, but I need to try it out before recommending it.

If you do want to stick with Soft15kHz, I can sell you one or two like-new 7300GS's cheap.

What would some of the better VGA to component transcoder to buy? And how would you want for the 7300gs? I have an extra geforce 9800gt i could use but dont know if soft15hkz works with it yet. I am hoping to get my tv as close to a arcade monitor that i will no longer want to buy one.

The two transcoders I've listed are the only I will recommend, as they're only I have personal experience with and know they'll work with whatever timing values you throw at them.  There are some from RCA, Audio Authority, and Kramer, but I can't give you any guarantee they'll work.

Look for your 9800gt here:

http://community.arcadeinfo.de/showthread.php?8170-International-Overview

If it's not listed either way, it's just untested, so you could try it yourself when you get a proper transcoder.

I will sell a 7300GS for $20 shipped in the US, or two for $35.  If you use a nVidia, you can't use CRT Emudriver though, only Soft15kHz + Powerstrip.  That will make things more complicated if using Groovymame, so keep that in mind.
