Mame compatibility with roms
« on: February 15, 2013, 07:40:06 pm »
I'm trying to figure out what version of MAME to use on the bartop I'm building because of speed concerns.  Is there a website where you can search for a game and see what the first version of MAME that supported it was?  I thought that mamedb.com might have this info, but didn't see it on there.  Any ideas?

I would suggest writing down the games you want to play, get the newest version of MAME and try those games out.
That is what I did and so far I have gotten every game to work I wanted except Battle Toads.

No reason battletoads shouldn't work your probably just missing bsmt2000.bin

But back on topic, to the op if you will tell us system specs and the most demanding games you expect to run the forum will be better equipped to help!

I'm running a core duo 1.6 Ghz with 1 gig of RAM and integrated video, it's a Dell E1405 laptop.  I want to be able to run as much as possible, but with emphasis on 80s classics and 90s 2d fighters, up to Super Street Fighter II and the Alpha Series.  I'm assuming I won't be able to run much of the 3d stuff like Tekken and such?

If you want 3d out of the box you're going to have to go with a modern Intel setup with a 64 bit OS.

Everything else you mentioned I have running on 146u5 on a Pentium 4.

Only the dreamcast sega arcade games give me trouble outside the 3d games.
