What am I forgeting?
« on: February 12, 2013, 04:11:35 pm »
What am I missing for buttons?

Player 1, Coin
Player 2, Coin

8-way, 6 buttons(SF style)
8-way, 6 buttons(SF style)

Save, Load, Start, Select, Esc, Pause - buttons.

The "Select" buttons would only be for NES,SNES, and Sega emulating.

What do you think

my system will only play: mame, NES, SNES, Sega

Thanks!

Doesn't look like you're forgetting anything egregious in terms of controlling a front-ended emulation setup.

That said, "Which (if any) admin buttons on a control panel?" is one of the seemingly more divisive and oft-argued topics on this board ... you may get more than you bargained for by asking!  :laugh2:

Personally, I use shifted keys for any "admin" buttons (save, load, pause, etc.)   At the very least, if your CoinUp and PlayerStart buttons are already on your control panel (as opposed to on a coin door or something), I'd have them run double duty as your console emulator Select and Start buttons.

Just promise us not to make something that resembles Darth Vader's chest plate or a completed game of connect four.

For admin buttons in MAME, I like to use: Enter, Esc, Tab (admin menu) and Pause.

I do this as well. Last thing I want is someone to have access to the MAME back end via "Tab".

Get into your NES, SNES, and Sega emulators and see if you can configure their admin buttons.

P1/P2 Start could possibly be the same as the console Start button

P1/P2 Coin could possibly be the same as console Select

Also, you "admin-o-phobes" :duckhunt telling OP not to include Tab should re-read what he posted -- he doesn't have a dedicated button for it.

His planned layout is in this post.

Nobody said he should, or shouldn't, include a "Tab" button.

This, on the other hand, is exactly what I already said.

EDIT: I'm sorry if that was harsh, but I feel like there's been a lot of unnecessary (maybe even unintentional) antagonism on the boards lately, and it has become rather tiring. Back to your regularly scheduled thread...

Really? Just the other day I was thinking it had been forever since a thread blew up and went to Post Hell.

I guess I don't know, really, I try to just avoid threads when they turn into that kind of thing, but lately it feel like it has been harder. Scott, sorry man, I'm just frustrated lately... no project, you know? (other than that multimeter... thanks for the info!  ;D)

Anyway, lets just get back on OP's topic... well, that is if OP still has any question here?

I mentioned 'Tab' because of post #5. Not the OP, sure, but it's not like it doesn't come up. :dunno

I hoped that the Duck Hunt dog would tip everyone off that I was kidding about the "admin-o-phobe" thing.  No malice intended toward anyone.

Shponglefan brought up Tab and Yotsuya warned against it.

No worries.  Thanks for keeping me honest.

Missed you posting it AND Nephasth quoting it AND Yotsuya quoting it.   :dizzy:

Maybe it's time for me to log off for the night.   :lol

Hi,

I anticipate my control panel will have just 1P start and 2P start.

For the "admin", I plan on using the "Shift" functions (P1 being the shift key - or perhaps P2 as its used less?)
e.g.
P1(shift)&P2 = Exit
P1&Player 1Button6=Pause

Tab, Save etc. I'll control as necessary from a wireless keyboard but I don't really expect to use this for normal game play, just admin purposes and initial configuration.

Anyone any experience of doing it like this? Will it work, or do you find exit/pause etc. happens accidentally too frequently?

Hey guys,

Thanks for all the postings! I really appreciate all of your knowledge!

now that you guys mention it I will have the player 1 and coin buttons also work as the start & Select during console emulation! What a great Idea.

That saves me tons of room!

Also what are your guys thoughts on a 7th button added to both players? is there a reason to have 7 buttons? I can't think of any games that use 7 buttons..... ???

EssexMame-

No, that's exactly how I do mine, and it's great. It keeps down the amount of buttons people need to push, and since none of my guests need to get into MAME's back end, it means I don't have to worry about people messing up the settings.

Yeah, I figured I didn't want people accidentally or otherwise going into the Mame/Mala/emulator menus (or indeed myself whilst playing games!)

It'll take some explaining for people to know the Quit key combo (and pause?) but they have an IQ of 50+ so they should be okay after a week or two :-)

A well-designed instruction card on the bezel is always a good idea when using shifted functions -- leave off any functions you don't want guests to use.

I don't tell any guests that aren't regulars about the shifted functions. The Beast is set up for token play, but also has a shifted function for adding credits. Only those in the inner circle know how to do this...

The reason for 7 buttons is usually just a hybrid NEO-GEO/Capcom layout.  That way people can either use 4 buttons in a row ala NEO-GEO, or 6 buttons in two rows of three ala Capcom.
