TMNT 1 : No sound
« on: February 10, 2013, 05:24:00 pm »
back when  i was trying to repair my arcade board, I plugged in TMNT. it was working perfectly, but something went wrong and it started to smoke...
When we DID get the machine working again, the board still worked, but no sound.

any idea if this is an easy fix?  I don't want to trust ebay for a new board..

thanks :)

Check the Repair boards over at KLOV. The TMNT board is a really well-documented one, and lots of folks over there have been round'n'round with them.

Two things I've noticed:

The volume pot goes bad.  Wiggle it and see if you get any sound (static, etc.).  Be warned it may be REALLY loud.  The amp on that thing is surprisingly powerful, and if the pot's broken, you can easily end up with full volume when you don't expect it.

The amp/heatsink is bolted to the PCB and is quite big mechanically.  The PCB can easily crack, usually along the line of pins for the amp chip.  Often, this causes no electrical damage but breaks the solder joints.  Try reflowing them.

I have a TMNT board that I've been troubleshooting sound on for a long time, to no avail, but I don't recall doing either of MM's suggestions, so maybe I'll give them a shot tonight.

Dunce: when you register for KLOV, you will need someone to vouch for you. Post here letting us know your KLOV UserID and one of us can do the vouching. Good luck!
