Smart strip and computer standby
« on: February 08, 2013, 06:07:54 pm »
Almost done with the woodworking part of my cab but have a question or two about the electrical setup.

The computer I'm using (brand new) goes into a stand by mode.....moving the mouse/keyboard turns it back on. Will this work with the smart strips?

There was a drawing of how to hook up the below power socket to the strip on this site, I tried searching but coming up with zip. Any one know where it is?

12v DC for coin mech, 120v monitor, 120v light.

I don't know if this will help but you may want to look into the BIOS settings of your computer for options.
With mine, I can set my arcade CPU to automatically boot up if it gets power again AFTER loosing power. Like after a power outage. So if I can cut power to the CPU safely, it will boot back up when I give it power rather than having to press a button on the tower. Enter the smart strip.

This idea in conjunction with a power strip will work for me. I plug of my components; CPU, speakers, marquee light, etc to the "smart" plugs. They only get power when the CPU (master) gets power. The master is controlled by an wireless switch.

I began with this idea from blogsite below. See toward the bottom of the page. I bought the Belkin Conserve" Energy Strip at Home Depot not too long ago.

The belkin is trash. You can't adjust the sensitivity. Stick with the Smartstrip brand. They have a nice little screw to adjust.

I agree with MTPPC - go with a high quality smart strip.

As an aside, regardless of which brand you choose be extremely careful with smart strips. I fried my Betson monitor twice because I thought I had adjusted it properly, but sometimes it would turn itself on and off repeatedly during the night... I woke up to a clicking noise (sounded like a turn signal on a car) and it was the sound of the power being turned on and off by the smart strip.  It fried the flyback converter on my Betson. I've since switched to a regular power strip that I can turn on and off manually just to be safe.

Just a heads-up.

The Belkin "Conserve" surge suppressor/power strip is not a smart-strip.

It is a wireless, remote-control power strip. You push a button on the remote, it trips a relay internally and turns on.

I have them in both my cabinets. They are built well, and work fantastically. All you have to do is set your PC to turn on when power is restored (BIOS setting).
