SNES/NES emulators for cabinet

I was not planning on installing a SNES/NES emulator on my cab but a few posts over the last few day got me interested in a few games. What are the recommended emulators for SNES/NES?

 I'm running Gameex as the front end so I can just install the defaults that Gameex provides, but I just want to double check in case one is better then the other.

Just start with MESS.  The best part is, if you already know how to work with MAME then you know how to work with MESS, because they're essentially the same thing.  Lazy man's dream!

I don't know how MESS stacks up against the leading dedicated console emulators in terms of emulation accuracy, but then again, I don't really give a ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---.  For the amount that I use it, it works just fine.

I'm not super deep into that world, so what I know is that ZSNES and Snes9x both work well.  The bigger question is whether you're looking just to play the games or you want accuracy.  If you want Accuracy you should look into BSNES as it is quoted as being 100% accurate.

So it's really up to you and how Gameex incorporates it.

I just installed ZSNES into my cab as it's supported by Maximus Arcade, and it works great with the control panel once I mapped the keys. I also had trouble initially as the background layers enable/disable settings were set to the same buttons as others, but once I removed those, no problems.

The best advice I have with all other emulators is to run them once without a game and set them up key bindings and all the sort.  I always seem to see issues when you attempt to run the emulator from a front end the first time.

I use zsnes and nestopia.  Both are easy to set up and work well enough for me.  here's a pretty good post with a list of emulators in use for various systems.

Some SNES (and anything newer than Snes) titles can be problematic on a cabinet. Anything that used the shoulder buttons in a directional fashion translates poorly to a standard arcade panel. This is the very reason why the Nintendo Super System (SNES based arcade setup from nintendo) sort of just had Snes controllers mounted on the control panel.
