I have a ROM boot card with ROMDOS installed left over from my Tournament Solitaire. I imagine with some new ROMS on it that I could do a totally diskless cab.

Has anyone done anything like this?

Not sure, but I saw a link at Brandorf's Cocktail Cab (link on main page) for a CompactFlash > IDE adaptor, which could also be used for a disk-less cab.

I recently burned a copy of KnoppixMame (self boot linux CD) with some roms on it, for a diskless system. Works great if you have enough RAM. SirP also mentioned another linux self boot system that uses advancemame.

the "D" in CD stands for "Disk" so it's not diskless.

No, the D in the official CD Audio logo stands for Disc. Disc usually refers to optical storage as disk usually refers to magnetic.

Edit: I found a resource for you. The logo that is on a CD you can tell what type of CD it is.

Compact Disc : CD

Diskette : Disk

When people say "diskless" (or "Discless"

) they usually mean that there are no actual disc drives at all. No Floppy, Hard, CD, or DVD.

No drives with moving parts.

The example I posted above, is truly diskless.

The advantages are speed, and no moving parts to wear out.

Ok, well sorry, I thought diskless ment no HD. But, the point being you could probably load the Knoppix image on a rom card and boot from it (giving your bios allows it).

I only have a 60 gb hard drive in my cab. No floppy or CD-ROM. I update it by connecting it to my main computer, using a 2-way uplink cat 5 cable.

Here, to alleviate all confusion, when I said "diskless" I meant.

No hard drive.
No CDROM drive.
No floppy disk drive.
Nothing that could be remotely considered a disk or disc.

Not sure how much the card can hold, it is circa 1994, so I am assuming it can probably hold 16 MB or so.

Well, not sure how you'd use ROMDOS (??) but if I was to go diskless I'd go for a 512meg flash card.

Rosdos is just a DOS version designed to run off ROM cards. Actually a little more up to date than MSDOS if I remember correctly. Mame should run on it just fine, anything that works on MSDOS is supposed to work on Romdos as well.

Anyway, only reason I am even talking about this is because I have that rom boot card laying around.
