Legal games to sell cabinet with?
« on: January 29, 2013, 01:18:23 pm »
I built a cabinet a few years back that I really enjoyed. Unfortunately in the new house it isn't feasible to put it on the 3rd floor where I want it. I'm considering selling in order to help fund building a new cocktail cab. I am unsure what kind of games to put on it. I bought a control panel from Hanaho a few years back that I think came with some classic roms.

What do you guys put on yours before you sell? Nothing with the wording must supply your own roms? I'm not sure this will appeal to a large audience. Thoughts appreciated.

Letter of the law states: If the game board doesn't come with it, you can't sell it.

Similarly, any OS involved, you'd better have a COA (Certificate of Authenticity) for.

However, what you choose to do vs. what is legal is your business.

Good point about the OS. I could put linux/advanceMame on it assuming there is anything that can legally be run with MAME. Doesn't sound like it. As far as windows goes I have a valid license on it right now, but not sure if that would help me out as far as game content.

As long as it is only for home use, you could probably get away with including "arcade greatest hits" pc ports.
My x-arcade came with a few discs of them.  I never messed with those, but I know Midway's collection allows you to launch games by individual exe, which means they can be launched from a front-end.  Just add -f to the command line to get fullscreen.  That collection includes Mortal Kombat.

Although not legal, nobody is going to come after you for selling one cab locally with everything included.
Listing it on ebay or selling them as a business...not so much.

The Midway one I was referring to was Midway Arcade Treasures.
The Deluxe Edition contains the same games as collection #2 and #3.

I am not intending to give you any advice, I am just going to make an observation.

I have seen hundreds of mame cabinets for sale over the years and almost every one of them had games on it, most of them had a full install. Right now I can go on amazon.com and select from several different circuit boards that combine mame and roms into the same package. I can also buy those systems pre-installed into cabinets from ALMOST every game retailer in America.

The mame license isn't enforceable and not even Namco seems to make any effort to protect their old IP anymore and they were the last ones who used to be serious about it.

Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.
