or all the time
it clicks then freezes.not all the time.
Clicking stops after it freezes.

I would consult customer support from the drive maker.  It should still be under warranty.

Yeah I was burning some stuff now.I will probley ship it back if it freezes again.Cant belive how lame the drive is though.
I mean it breaks after a month >:(

another question, does file system have anything to do with HD locking up ?
I formated the drive using the cd I got with the drive.
File system is fat 32.

what exactly is the difference between NTFS,fat32 and fat16 ???
(always wondered)

If it's making a clicking sound, then your in trouble.  That drives going to fail soon.  Back up all your data.  Call the manufactor and get a replacement.

A failure in the first month is not that odd.

If a hard drive ( or most other electronic devices ) are going to fail, it is either going to be when it is very new (from a defect ) or when it is very old (due to wear on the mechanical parts)

the different formatting levels have to do with the size of blocks drive is divided into

always go fat 32 unless you are on xp the go ntfs

Can you elaborate on "Locking up?"

How do you know it's locking up?  If the drive is truely locking up, I suspect the kinetic energy of the platters spinning and suddenly locking up would tear the drive apart in a spectacular display of shredded metal.

If by "Locking up" you mean something else, perhaps we can diagnose the problem a little better :)

I have all my drives on cable select.  It sure makes moving them around easier.  No more moving jumpers around.

Your just lucky that its not clicking now.   Jumper settings will not alter that.

The click means that the heads are out of alignment and the drive WILL fail soon.

Ive had 3 hd failures... so Im Very familiar with this.

Do a drive copy and hopefully ghost as much info as possible from drive to drive (or cd) - ASAP!

The bad sectors from the bad head lock the system/ HD.   Try to copy other areas of the disk to get a backup without lockups.

Some things to keep this from happening again:

Mount a fan that points airflow over the Hd.   Drives usully fail because they get too hot.  THe metal expands and then causes problems.  Do not mount drives without a good 1" space in between them.. as the highest one will absorb the lowers heat.  If this isnt possible - buy a better case... as its worth it.

Ive now got a case that has fans that mount in front of all the HD bays to keep tham all cool.  Your drives will last 10 times as long this way.  Ive yet to have a failure since keeping my HD's ultra cool.

However... sometimes shock from shipping and or handleing within stores can lead to bad heads.  : (

Also - the click is known to Tech support as "The Click of Death!"

Magnetic/Mechanical media is always prone to data-loss... so keep a 2nd drive for just that - a complete backup just in case.

Actually that is exactly what I did.the drive was mounted on the bottom and I put that around the top where I had the floopy and everything started working again.
Hopefully nothing happens to the HD anytime soon.
THanks for infos everyone, always good to know :)

Don't think you're out of the woods yet. Send that drive back immediately. Drives don't just click and then stop forever. That is a sure sign that it WILL fail. Just ship it back and get another under warranty. Otherwise, somewhere down the line you're gonna lose everything. I've had that happen to me... trust me, hard drives do not click... EVER.. unless they are on the verge of death. Fans, jumpers, IDE cables, etc have no bearing whatsoever on this.
first off your and idiot

Man I love the internet, haha.

I'm just wondering, out of curiosity, if there's a setting in either windows or bios that turns the hard drive off after a certain amount of inactivity time.  My drives were making a really funny clicking sound and then shutting off, but eventually I realized they were going into a power save mode and just flushing the write buffer and parking the heads.  Maybe that's causing your software to freeze.

I've heard of weirder things, anyway.   Like for example, this...

Yes.  Windows can be set to turn off the hard drives after a certain amount of time has passed without using them.

what exactly is the difference between NTFS,fat32 and fat16 ???
(always wondered)

NTFS is a much more secure and supposedly reliable file system and FAT or FAT32.  It tends to be a real pain though when your OS goes down, because you can't just pop in a dos boot disk and copy off what you want...It's much more involved.
FAT - being the predecessor to FAT32, has a 2GB partition limit. <heh...imagine having 40 - 2GB partions on your 80GB drive>
FAT32 - a more optimised and "stable" version of FAT.

Going back to your origional problem though...Something I've seen quite a bit of lately...The hard drive could be having issues with the power connector.  I'm suspecting that either the hard drive manufacturers or the power supply manufacturers are making cheaper contacts that get corroded easier causing intermittant contact.  Usually either reseating the power connector or swapping power cables will fix this for awhile at least <sounds plausable given your recent fix>.  In most cases, it's been the power supply causing the trouble for me.  I have had drives fail shortly after this fix too though <perhaps the bad power for an extended amount of time might have encouraged it though>

Just my 2 cents
