Getting a laser to hit on the crosshairs will be very succeptible to changes in distance. (diagram below)

Something that might work better is a red-dot holographic sight, but I have no idea what the minimum range is for proper parallax correction.

Why not just modify MAME's crosshair images to a red dot and blue dot?

Why not just modify MAME's crosshair images to a red dot and blue dot?

That was always my plan for IR guns on the LCD cab. (but I would go green dot  :P )
Never did check into what's involved.

On the digital leisure PC versions of the American Laser games, the crosshairs are an easily accessible PNG.
I made them blank for my Act Labs CRT guns.

With IR guns, a dot generated from the gun isn't going to be accurate anyway.
The angle and position of the gun effect the calibration.
What would be correct for you is going to be screwed up for someone shorter or standing in a different position.

Best to stay with the emulator created crosshairs as that is where the shot will go.

Crosshairs are just PNG files placed in a 'crosshair' directory in your MAME folder. Turn them on in the Tab Menu.

You can download a good set of MAME crosshairs from here: http://mrdo.mameworld.info/mame_artwork_supp.php

There is a sm2-grn.png in the set that can be easily modified to be a green dot.

I attached the greendot.png I made from that one.
