cocktail cab control options
« on: January 17, 2013, 07:00:21 pm »
Hi,
I am planning the controls for a cocktail cabinet. The cab will mainly be for mame but also a few other emulators and a jukebox. It is a 3 sided table with two players next to each other on the horizontal and two players facing each other on the vertical.
For the vertical i was going to use two ultra 360's so 4-way stick games were an option. Plus a spinner for each player. Three buttons per player.
For the horizontal i thought of a trackball with two standard 8-way sticks and 6 buttons per player.

I lowered the number of buttons to three for the vertical sides as i don't think they would be used.

Does it look like i have covered all the bases ?

regards

Welcome aboard, Stuntpuppy.

There are several other things to consider as you work through the design process.

Are you sure you want the jukebox built into this cocktail or would it be better as a separate project so you can play/change tunes without using your cocktail's processor time and HDD?

How many and what type of admin buttons do you want? (Do you want these on dedicated buttons or as a shifted function?)
P1, P2 Start
P1, P2 Coin (?) - Buttons on CP, coin door w. tokens, or coin door w. switch on coin reject.
Pause (?) - Buttons on different sides can be wired to same input
Exit (?)
Menu (?)

What front end, emulators (besides MAME), and jukebox software do you want to use?

Do you have a good screen with a wide enough viewing angle?

Hi, thanks for the welcome.

I am ok with it as a jukebox. Really this is to keep my other half happy, and there is'nt a large music collection anyway.
What music i do have is on a nearby NAS.

I hadn't considered admin buttons beyond P1 and P2, but will add those plus one extra button to the horizontal section
To the vertical side would i be right in thinking i have P1 on one side and P2 on the opposite players panel ?
That would be two buttons per vertical control panel (P1 plus extra button on one vertical side and P2 plus extra button on the opposite vertical panel)
Any extra buttons i need i would get from shifted functions.

I will be using Game-Ex in the cab which will serve the jukebox side too.

As for other emulators, beyond mame, i am not really decided on this yet.
I only want a few though, like snes, amiga & megadrive.

I have an IPS LCD monitor for the cabinet.
