Looking for modern DIY kit
« on: January 14, 2013, 10:50:03 am »
Hi everyone, I'm new to this site so please excuse me if this has been discussed before.

I'm looking to buy a cabinet kit for my MAME project.  I would personally prefer a classic looking arcade machine, but if I want a machine at all then I have to listen to my wife's wishes for a more modern look :)

I found this website and they have some really great looking high-gloss white cabinets. http://www.arcadeworx.com.au/

However, they are located in Australia which could be cost prohibitive for me in Virginia.

Does anyone know of a US based company that makes modern looking cabinets like this?  Or could custom build one?  Basically I'd like a slimmer design and a nice high gloss finish.  I'd also like to avoid wiring my own control panel.

A kit that consists of the cabinet parts and fully assembled control panel would be ideal.  Then I can assemble everything and add my own monitor/PC/speakers.

If anyone can point me in the right direction it would be a huge help!

I got my cab from these guys which I think will provide you with what you want to do.  Expensive (and BIG depending on model choice), but nice package and options.  See below for link, farther below for personal pic:

I went with Cab only and built my Control Panel, so can't talk to that piece, but their CPs looks nice.

I also built a Mameroom (Northcoast Customs) machine. Fantastic piece of kit.

Keep in mind with a Northcoast kit you'll have to figure out how to mount your own monitor (lots of ways to do it!) and build a bezel, but the hard part of making the cabinet is out of the way.

Thank you both for your response.  I have seen the Mameroom cabinets before and they look great!

However, I'm trying to find someone who makes cabinets a bit sleeker (not as deep) and in colors other than black (white in particular).  Even if they don't have kits specifically like this in stock, maybe there is a company out there that can make something custom?

Just call some local operators and buy a shell or a broken game. I didn't see where you were saying if you were going to use a cga monitor or an LCD. That has some bearing on the decision, but you should be able to find an empty cabinet without a lot of work. In fact, I have over a dozen right now. I'll sell you one for a hundred bucks if you arrange shipping from 59101 via NAVL.
