Sjaak,
I got your PM but can't seem to reply, I suppose since I'm a new registrant.
All else, I apologize for the somewhat off topic post. Hopefully you'll find it interesting.
I have not publicly posted my 1st, one and only completed Arcade Cabinet project, which was consequently back in 1997. I built my brother and his wife a cocktail cabinet (from an old arkanoid cab) with a (now) early release of Mame. When I started the project they didn't even have support for the cocktail dip settings for screen rotation. I actually emailed Nicola to ask him if it would be possible to add rotation between players as a feature. He notified me at the time that they were in the process of adding support for cocktail mode in the latest version - perfect timing. The machine was built on a non-intel chip (name started with "C" but I can't remember it now). I disassembled crappy PC joysticks and wired them to Happ controls. It had a keyboard hinged horizontally to the rear long edge of the top wood (opposite the coin door side). I also installed Cool Edit and fitted the cab with external 1/4 audio in/out jacks for he and his wife to plug in and do digital audio recording/editing on it. I totally refurbished the cabinet, stripped and repainted the top glass player controls area masking, replaced the CRT with a PC monitor of the same size (removed the plastic bezel and case). I made custom graphics for the top glass. I did this all in the span of 3 weeks to make it in time for their wedding.
My uncle and I delivered it to their apartment, asked them to leave the living room, brought it in and set it up. We started Dig Dug (his favorite game from back in the day) and then let them back in the room. He was ecstatic that I had gotten him a Dig Dug machine, then he noticed the graphics and I showed him the game menu, then the keyboard and then Cool Edit.
It was one of the first of it's kind before Mame became practically a household name.
I've since collected a ton of controls over many years, always with aspirations of making a new custom cab with trackball, 4 joysticks, a spinner for Tron/Tempest etc. but life has been too busy. Now I've got a 2.5 year old son who is quickly learning to love gaming thanks in large part to Wreck it Ralph (and our new Wii U). I think this would be a great project for us. Maybe build a minicab with another cheap PC. I have all the arcade parts already.
I've been toying with the idea of just skinning my iCade with RidicRick's graphics and just getting the iPad version of FIF, and that may be the easier route, but I love the idea of this project with/for my son.
Anyway, thanks for the consideration. I'd love to try out your version.

PS: I've got a Crystal Castles Cocktail (S/N CK00030) in great shape (new original top glass) and a Gauntlet machine in OK shape that plays really well. My son loves them and can actually play Gauntlet relatively well. These were my 2 favorite games from childhood.
