Low Profile Video Card Options?
« on: January 02, 2013, 02:14:39 am »
My wife has finally caved and is going to let me assemble my machine.

I have a decent low profile tower that will be adapted for this, it's a triple core 2.2ghz with 1gb of ram.  So decent and workable for most emulators and such.  I do want to throw a better video card in it though as I would like to run some more modern systems at a decent speed, like Dreamcast and possibly even some Wii games (Such as NSMB and Muramasa).  Also my son is begging me to get Skylanders to run on it and without a graphics card I don't think it will be possible (Giants recommends either a GeForce 8800 GS or Radeon HD 2600 Pro).  Anyways, I'd like to send no more than say $50 on it.  Right now I've been looking at an ATI Radeon HD5450 1GB, but I am so out of touch with modern PC gaming I am not even sure if that will run well.

Any pointers would be very helpful.

Thanks,
Glenn

You can get the 5450 in Canada right now for less than $20 so it should be even cheaper in the US.

Thanks guys, I'm thinking I may bite the bullet on this and hope it works well, BTW Tiger Direct USA was running the same deal.
Hopefully it fills my meager needs well enough.

Actually it was more of an I found a way to make it seem less obtrusive in our household.

It's not going to be a normal machine per say, instead it will be built to fit between two bookshelves which contain all my geekery, it's essentially going to be a stand with the controller mounted on the front with a TV sitting up on top (flat screen), below the CP will have a small cabinet for storing my more commonly played board games.  It's hard to describe what I have in mind, when I get closer to construction time I'll upload some designs and pics.
