New to laminate...which laminate do you use?
« on: December 31, 2012, 10:45:13 am »
I'm a bit confused about the laminate that is used on cabs.  Is it the giant sheets of hard laminate, or roll-type?  Got any links to the laminate that you used?  I'm thinking about just using black.

There are different laminates rated for vertical and horizontal use.  I used the vertical which is thinner and can be rolled up.

Here is the seller I bought mine from.  I purchased 5 sheets of black and have been real happy with the product.

I use laminate that is already stuck to the Plywood/MDF on both sides.... Go to your local plywood store (Not Home Depot/Lowes) and ask for melamine coated plywood.

I use Formica brand laminate (1/16") from Home Depot. U can get it in various sized sheets. I buy the 4x8' sheets. I think it ends up costing around $60. They have to special order it for me in the section of the store that sells granite and other countertop material. It takes a week or two to get it. Comes rolled up in a big cardboard box to make it easier to ship and to bring home from the store.

I use melamine coated MDF all the time but it is not as tough as Laminate.  I get black laminate from Home Depot as it is the only one that they seem to stock that does not look like a kitchen counter (that's the purpose I guess).  Any other colors are special order.

I used Formica brand that I bought from lowes. As said above, it's 1/16" thick.
It comes rolled up.
Wilsonart also has a similar laminate but I have read somewhere on line that its not as durable as Formica brand but I've never tried it.
Home Depot in my area has 4x8 sheets of wilsonart black laminate in stock.

Just a little tip: if you're doing the laminate inside, I'm told the chemical based adhesives can stink bad. I used water based from 3M, I believe the part number is 30NF. It costs about double as the others ($30 a quart at Graingers) but it works great and a quart will do a whole cabinet.

If you don't want to mess with gluing my brother-in-law gave me a great time-saving tip I documented here.

I bought my MDF from a specialty wood store.  When I told the clerk that I planned to laminate it he mentioned they could special order pre-laminated MDF.  I didn't get a price since I already had my laminate but you might want to ask about it if you don't want to laminate.
