Help please. Rowe cd100 jukebox speakers
« on: December 24, 2012, 03:11:32 pm »
I just bought a cd100a jukebox and one sub woofer doesn't work.  Also the left side mide and tweeter has low volume and sounds bad.   Is there a simple way to find out what may be wrong???

Thanks so much for any help!

Ok, I went into service mode, found code, it said a low battery.   Inside the juke box still has led red light flashing on the ccc next to system error.

I also switched my subs, and they are not blown.  the weird thing is when I stitched, and took one of the 3 wires of on sub, it made the other sub sound better????

Is my amp bad???????

Hello du24pont24.

It sounds like one of the channels is out on your amp. Fortunately, it is easy to change the TO-3 transistors on the amp as they are serviceable parts. There are 4 transistors attached to the large heat sink.  You will need one 2n6287 and one 2n6284 for each channel. I would suggest changing all 4 transistors.

Beware of buying transistors from E-bay especially from China as you run the risk of getting counterfeit transistors and it will blow up some resistors on your driver board. My suggestion, don't buy them from ebay.  You can get the ST brand for a few bucks each at a reputable company like futureelectronics.com. Be careful removing the old transistors as you will need to reuse the plastic mica insulator. I would also get some heat sink grease online or from radio shack.

Lastly, the led lights on your CCC can be deceiving. It may just look like the error light is lit at a glance because the leds are not fully aligned to the status words on the ccc cover, really take a look at it. You may be just looking at the Rowelink Command light.

Good luck

Ok, thanks for the help!    I ordered the transistors but the had some kind of mat instead of grease, is that ok???   How hard are they to put in??  They just slide in????   How hard is it to take the amp out to work on it???  I looked thru manual, but cant find how to take it out.

Thanks for all the help!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would use the MICA insulator that is already attached to the existing transistor. The transistors are the plug in type and not hard to change out. The amp should slide up and out of the jukebox (don't forget to undo the wires). You will have to pop out the two driver boards and the pre-amp from the back of the amp so you can get to the back of the transistor sockets. The transistors are mounted on the top of the heatsink. You may need to slide off the cover in order to see the transistors. Each transistor is mounted to the heatsink by two screws.  Just take your time and the job should go easy.

Good luck.

John

jdemarti,

Thanks for the help, I have some transistors ordered.   I hope it is not too bad to get the amp out.   Good call on the ccc error led.   It is not on, it is the rowelink led!  (made me feel better)    I did take the ccc apart, and too into a computer repair shop, they soldered in a battery holder in and put in a new battery.   It works great now, and I don't have to reset to free play every time I turn it on!

I bought 8 total transistors, thinking I have spares if I ever need them again.   I will tackle that job soon!

Thanks again!   Feels good to know that this thing will work again soon!!!!!!

I don't think you have any bad speakers.

The amplifier likely needs servicing. It is now a 22 year old amplifier and could have bad output transistors in one channel.

To remove amplifier, take off the amplifier compartment fiberboard covers. The amplifier as originally shipped from the factory has two black 1/4" hex head sheet metal screws near the carrying handle securing the amplifier for shipment (prevents it from moving around) that will need to be removed first if they have not already been removed. Now unplug all the cables from the amplifier and pay particular attention to the connector marked volume as it is not keyed and can mistakenly be put on backwards. The amplifier sits in "keyhole" slots. Lift it up and off those slots and out of the machine.

Set the amplifier on your workbench under a good light and check fuses on both driver boards. On or more might be blown. If so, that means one or more output transistors mounted on that large heatsink are bad. Pay particular attention to which number transistor is in which socket so you don't mix them up.

On the driver boards, look for bad solder joints at the connector header pins. One of the 5 watt resistors may be open circuit and may need replacing. Recap the driver boards.

One the preamp board, check for bad solder joints and recap it too. Pay attention to the orientation of the jumper plug connector. It is not keyed and can be mistakenly plugged in backwards.

Ok, frustrated now!   I changed the transistors , and 2 of the 8amp fueses were blown.  I hooked everything back up but I got nothing.  I switched from the "amp" plug on my power supply to the service plug and then it worked.  Everything sounds soo much better , and all speakers are now working.   So I don't understand why the power supply plug doesn't work now.

The other problem now is the key pad doesn't work.  Only a few numbers work, but when I switch it to "service" mode, all the buttons seen to work!   I am soo lost now, I fixed one problem and now created another!????????

I did try to connect a mp3 player to the amp rca jacks.   It wouldn't play until I turned power off inside the juke box.    I thought I could connect rca's from a mp3 player and the cd player, but I guess not.

Please someone help me! Thanks for all the help so far!

Ok, I did find one wire loose on the smaller connector to the keyboard.   How do you get the wire back into the plug???  Is there a trick to doing this??

I found on craigslist.  I also watched ebay and put in a search within 75 miles from my town.    If you take your time, you will find one!  You can also try a arcade/repair company that sells them also, but they usually want very top dollar for a juke.  I paid $500 but you may find a little better deal.   I am learning a lot about them from this nice forum!

Did you get the wire back in the keyboard circuit?  Strange about the dust thing...  Never seen anything like that before. Anyway, I prefer hooking the amp up to the service plug anyway.  That way when you switch the power off on the back of the jukebox it will also turn off the amp.

Great you got it fixed.

No, I did not get wire back in, but seems to be working fine.   I just need to figure out replacement woofers.    I have a different post if you have any answers for me.  (Replacement speakers for CD100???????)
