First Build, Nearly finished Help needed
« on: December 08, 2012, 12:06:04 pm »
I've just finished wiring up my jamma arcade cocktail cabinet. I've got power the controls are wired up right put my monitor is showing no signal. I've got a 278 in 1 board and the connection is on the board to my monitor (it's a 19" LCD).

I've checked my wiring against the instructions i've been given by the shop and as far as i can tell i'm connected correctly. The wires not connected are
P - Vid Synch/N - Vid Green/13 - Vid Blue/12 - Vid Red/2 - Ground - I've been told i don't need these connected as it connects via the gameboard.

J - Counter 2/R - Service/7 - Key/15 - Test - This i believe is the coin door which i dont have/need/want

1 - Ground/5 - -5V (these are doubled up on the power side but are connected to a little white block connector along with 16 - Coin)

25 - opt/26 - opt/d - opt/e - opt - dont' need them i think.

Any help would be much appreciated as my little lad is driving me nuts wanting to play them 'good old games'.

I've got the 278 in 1 jamma board, it's got a VGA output on it and 2 little switches which are both down. i've attatched the picture of it. It is really frustrating to get near enough everything done and not to be able to play on it grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

One of those switches probably selects between 15Khz and 31 Khz. You would use the JAMMA harness outputs for the 15KHZ and the VGA connection for your LCD monitor (31Khz). What do the instructions say about those dip switches?

What are you using for the 19" lcd?
Is it a vga type lcd (with the 15pin video connector)
or is it an arcade replacement type (15khz) like those available from wells gardner and betson?

I know on a board like the 60-in-1, there are dip switches to select cga or vga, what does the manual on the 278-in-1 say?

I didn't have a manual with the board, might need to get onto them about that.
the monitors a standard 19" VGA (15 pin connector)

This is how i've got my power wired up, i've also got 3 spare wires attatched to a connector that i've got no idea what they're for. them wires are 1, 16 and 5, 1 and 5 have 2 of the small wires coming out of the harness and these have been attatched to the power supply

Here is the manual for a 278 in 1 vertical board that looks the same as yours.  Apparently sw1 on the board controls the video and must be set right for you to get a display on your monitor.  Never buy a board without a manual or at least the option to download one.  ;D

Bit 1 of SW1 must be on for VGA display.    Bit one is the lowest switch on SW1 and is located on the RHS of the board with the jamma connector facing down.   In your pic and the manual it is blue and looks like it only controls 2 bits.

Cheers for that Bob, i'm learning a lot on my first build. Am hoping to start another one at some point but the missus is gonna take some convincing ha ha.

Does the rest of the wiring look okay and can you confirm for me that i've got the board plugged in the right way. The lights coming on the power supply but it's not coming on on the board?

I cannot verify the wiring on the jamma harness to PS etc but if I were you I would forget about wiring the jamma harness to the power supply and just use a Molex connector like ones used with computer PS and provide the power directly to the board.  The board will provide the power to whatever needs it viva the jamma connector.  You can get the connector by cutting one off and old PC power supply or at your local PC parts store. The PC power connector on multi boards assumes that many users will be using a PC power supply not an arcade power supply.

well now that you have the power supply how it is, you might as well keep it that way.

the wiring looks correct at least in the fact that you have black on common, red on +5v and yellow on 12v.
most of these modern boards don't need -5v (orange).

I would however verify that the +5v is adjusted correctly by using a multi meter to check the voltage at the jamma board where the power wires are.
you wanna see something like 5.1, 5.2volts there.

I don't see an LED in the picture or a mention in the manual.   Can you verify where the LED is on the board that is not turning on?

That's great to hear.
I understand how frustrating it can be to be so close and have something like this not working.
Good job, hope you enjoy it.
