Please help with annoying problem
« on: December 03, 2012, 04:19:34 am »
Hi all, I have installed MaLa onto a new bartop machine I've built due to it's support of screen rotation. However after the initial creation of the mame.xml file by MaLa it is never able to access or write to it again. Whenever I try to save a game list or do any other changes I get an error saying "Error opening mame xml file!". It appears initially when I choose to, say generate a games list then again after it tries. After that it says "No games were added! Review collection options and ensure using XML file (produced by Mame) is >.84.

My version of MAME is 0.100 so that would say to me it's >.84?

If I try to Create another xml file via the config I get an error saying "Error creating mame xml file (size = 0 byte)!"

When first installed before making any changes games worked when launching from the MaLa menu, now none of the games load and I get an error "Failed to execute program "mame.exe 1942". Error Code 1455.

Can anyone help or suggest why this XML file is proving so difficult to work with?

Thanks.

try another different/second version of mame? i tried a couple that gave me problems i couldnt sort out is there a reason you`re sticking to that version? you could keep the old one to go back to, just a suggestion that worked for me.
Hit something hard enough it should work, if it dont the result can always be called art :)

I have a similar problem trying to set up MaLa 174, with MAME version 0.147, running XP.

Mala launches, get message of collecting Bios, that is OK, then "Collecting games", then

"Error opening mame XML file!"

"0 games collected in the list
No games added
Review collection options (which I did) and ensure using XML file is >.84"

I found "mame.xml in the MAME folder, but cannot determine if it is >.84

The ROMS are version 1.47, and I have (5) of them in the ROMs folder, still zipped.

Help with this would be appreciated, I am ready to move on to setting up a controls console and cabinet.

Thanks

Just delete the xml file.  Mala will make a new one the next time it is ran.

You might want to go ahead and switch to MAME v.148 because there was a glitch in all the mortal kombat games in v.147.
All but a few of the v.147 roms will still work.  Since you are only adding a few at a time, chances are all yours will work fine.

Thanks for the replies.

I verified the page files is on.

Also verified the mame.xml is version 1.0

Also deleted the mame.xml folder and allowed it to be remade, no improvement.

Still getting "Error opening mame XML file!"

When selecting Mala.exe

there is a message of

Mala.exe-entry point not found.  the procedure point WMcreate Reader could not be located in the dynamic link library WMVcore.DLL

Is this related to the mame.XML issue?

Problem solved.

TTFOOL had the solution, add more memory.  I had increased the virtual memory using the paging file in XP, but it was not enough.  This computer was running 128MB of RAM, I swapped it out for a stick of 256MB SDRAM.  The ROMs loaded and there was no error message about the XML file. :)
