NO LCD-MARQUEE WITH GROOVYMAME???
« on: November 21, 2012, 01:46:32 pm »

I am just about to build an arcade cabinet with a 29"/15KHz-tube for Daphne and MAME.

A friend that is my advisor told me that, if I want to have the real deal, I have to go with GroovyMame for correct refresh-rates and resolutions.

Now he also told me that there is no support for a dual screen support on GroovyMame except with identical clone setups which is not easy with a tube and stretch LCD.

Please guys, tell me how I can use GroovyMame with a LCD-Marquee, no matter what it takes, I thougt to go with dual graphic cards to avoid to suck performance from the card that powers the CRT-screen but if need I even would go with twin computer, a PC for the LCD-Marquee would no be expensive anyway.

If you need the specs, that is the LCD for the marquee

Greatful for any answer

I am just to build my cab and I am intended to go with with groovyMame as my friend told me (he does the softwarestuff for the cab) that is the best system and just a must have. But otherwise he also told me that I cannot use my LG M2900S strech-monitor as LCD-Marquee as GroovyMame does not support dual monitors. Are you guys are planning to do that in the near future, it would be a shame if that great programm would not support such a cool function....

Hi synonym9,

Sorry for the late answer but I've been too busy preparing the update.

I haven't tested this marquee feature myself yet so I cannot provide an answer, but I think there shouldn't be any fundamental problem for that to work. Maybe your friend means that GM doesn't support custom modelines for two separte displays, that's true, but not exactly what you're intending here.

I have been checking this today and definitely it's not going to work, the way we internally force resolutions in GroovyMAME will prevent a second monitor to display a different resolution, so your friend is basically right. There are some other limitations regarding multi-monitor setups that I wanted to target at some point in the future, so I will include this feature in the pack.

So you mean I can keep my LCD and integrate it in my build and the functionality will be in one of the next updates?

I cannot say good bye to the LCD-Marquee as it is just such a cool feature and it helps to save the marquee artwork, we dont want to loose that art:

I can't promise you anything, it may or may not work in the future, my priority is accurate video, not the sorrounding paraphernalia. However I have a deep respect for the MAME project and I truly hate breaking things that work for the main line project, so I definitely will have a look at it, especially considering this is related to multi-screen setups which I already knew that were problematic after the GM patch but I just didn't have time to dig in the problem as I wanted to have a working release before the end of the year.

Just out of interest, does this mean multi monitor games like punch out or outrunners don't work either?

As it goes, do these work with regular mame? I hear they do but never tried it or saw anyone else do it.

Multi monitor games work in GroovyMAME as well as in regular MAME, provided you disable the -multithreading option, otherwise they get into a dead-lock in GroovyMAME. But there's a limitation to this: both monitors need to have the same specs because they're going to share the same modeline. So this is fine if you have a dual head arcade setup with two similar arcade monitors. The problem with a LCD marquee is that it needs its own resolution different from the game's one, that's why it doesn't work in GroovyMAME.

Hi there - as a massive appreciator of Groovymame and the work and support that's been put into it but also someone who has a nice shiny LCD marquee so in the same situation as the op I wondered if there was any update on this?

I can understand that this problem probably only affects a handful of people so may not be worth the time to spend on it so no probs if that is the case as I'm sure you have plenty of more interesting/other stuff to work on!

Cheers (and massive thanks for GM!)   :notworthy:

well that's pretty cool...didn't know you could do this..
but the $ would be quite high just for displaying marquees...not to mention the time involved in setting it up as well..

The monitors are expensive but setting it up need not be. You could use any 2nd hand 16:9.monitor if you were building a cab and find a way to incorporate it - even if you were hiding the non marquee part.

Getting high quality marquee scans is the difficult part. Theres. Few sites out there with hi res scans but it's still surprising how many popular games don't have scanned artwork available. R-type is a good example.

No worries. This will just work as soon as the multiple screen support is added to GroovyMAME. It's only that it needs some serious refactoring and the development is a bit stuck at this point of the year.

That's fantastic news!

I was debating whether to stick with Groovy mame and no marquees or using vanilla mame with the marquees but the massive advantages of GM were definitely leaning me towards dropping the marquee idea. Now I don't have to decide. I haven't started building the cab yet - and probably wont get a chance this year but it's good to know that at some point down the line it could work.

All the best - and thanks again...

What about USB Screens?
I have been toying with the idea of fitting a small 7" screen for info such as controls etc.. are they any different to normal screens in this regard?

I have bought 2 from a company, but only need one. The other one was for a participant that is not interestet in the hobby anymore.

I can offer you to get a hand on one of them.

They are like new....maybe they are, they came in a box and without any physical sign of previous useage.
