Wire switching power supply into Galaga
« on: November 18, 2012, 04:31:26 pm »
ok so I bought my grail, a Galaga. The inline power supply had a really bad hacked connector on it (it wasnt even the right connector) so I bought a switching power supply and an adapter wire:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/360319931933

and yes I know I over paid, you do dumb ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- like that when you want your grail up and running. So I wired it in the way that arcadeshop's website says to wire it in, well except the white wire for the coin counter.

instructions here: http://www.arcadeshop.com/gal-tips.htm

Needless to say, no picture but the monitor and marquee light work, so I'm vexed. There is no sound and no picture on the tube (but it does light up). I have pics of all the wiring and can post if need be but Im fishing for advice first. I emails twistedquarter and they said all I need to do is hook up the 3 pin harness for the board, but I dont understand how the marquee, coin door, and other lights are supposed to get juice if all thats hooked up is the 3 wire harness to the board.

halp?

hi
looking from the top down left to right
NOT SOLDER SIDE BUT PART'S SIDE ie TOP
1-2 =black=ground
3-4=+5
that should get u pic.
sound is +12v and i do think it is 4 or 5 ?
-5 is not required
the pin's label out 1-27/ a-z
but in truth the layout is less
just use my basic guide
video is on the far right side
if u need exact ring me up

Malenko.

When I have wiring issues, I pull ALL of the wiring out of the machine, then rewire the machine as JAMMA if it wasn't already. If the machine was not originally jamma then I will use the scraps of the original wiring to make a jamma adapter.
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

I thought about it, but Galaga isnt jamma and I sorta wanted to keep it as stock as possible. I'd keep the factory linear supply if the wiring wasnt so hacked at the connector. I guess I could wire it for jamma then get a JAMMA to Galaga adapter, just seems weird. Also, Galaga's video connector is a sep harness on the board itself, its weird.

well if you hooked up your wiring correctly and being that you have power, I would first get a multi-meter to test voltages. They are pretty inexpensive and can be found locally home depot, radio shack etc.. most people will tell you to buy a fluke which is the best, but I would start with an inexpensive one and get familiar with it if you don't already own one. So it sounds like you have monitor neck glow only, could need to be synched properly, could need a cap kit. It's possible that you don't have a picture at all due to the fact that you might have a bad PCB. It's really hard to tell. It's frustrating but once you fix one problem you will be amazed how similar the issues are on various cabs. Don't get overwhelmed take a break if you need to. I would retrace all of the wiring first, test voltages. Make sure also your power supply switch is set to 110v respectively you should have a toggle switch on the bottom and that it's not on 220v... Only once was I sent a new one with it set to 220v. Not a terrible Idea to order another PCB for the cabinet Galaga's are notorious for having ram / rom issues.
