New and looking to convert a jamma cabinet

I had a post started where I was going to build a bartop but came across a cabinet and ended up buying it instead.  I am closing the old thread because this will no longer be a bartop build. Here is a link to the old post that I am closing and pointing over to this post.

I seen the Lono2 and liked that it comes with wiring harness. Wasnt sure how it stands up to the IPAC4? Any suggestions?

I plan on sticking with 4 players with JWL-UM-8 which can be switched from 4/8 way.

My thought is to change the positions of the player from 1, 2, 3, 4 to 4, 1, 2, 3 so player 1 and 2 will be in the center. Player 1 and 2 will be the most used.

Also thinking of using 6 player buttons for players 1, 2 and maybe only 4 player buttons for players 3, 4

Player 1,2,3,4 start buttons.

Player 1,2,3,4 coin buttons, or shifted buttons for the coins or find a good way to use the coin mechanism as coin buttons.

Exit, pause, menu button

Plus a button wired to the computer for power.

Any thought on this trackball for bowling and golden tee games?

If purchasing led buttons does it require me to buy a separate device to light the buttons or would i be able to use the Lono2 or IPAC4?

I think I found the answer to my led button question and it is that I can run the led's from the computer power supply if I understand correctly? Do most people wire buttons like this? This would mean that any time the machine is on all of the led buttons would be on.

That monitor is way too small for that cabinet, it will look ridiculous. That cabinet needs a 27" monitor not a 21" PC monitor (which is 19" in arcade terms). The monitor in that cabinet is going to be medium resolution and the joysticks are going to be 49-ways.

Does the machine work already? Does the monitor work?

Yeah i am wanting a bigger monitor. I measured and it is actually only a couple inches smaller than the one that was in the cabinet before i picked it up. Would I be able to use a TV? I could probably find a 27" tv to use.

I was doing some measuring and might be able to fit a 32" TV after I remove the TV cabinet. I have a friend that I am going to be able to get the 32" TV from in a couple weeks. I will have to get a converter to convert my VGA to S-video. Hope it still looks good after converting to S-video. from what I found on this forum S-video does not looks pretty decent. Anyone using s-video want to comment?

The casing of that monitor might only be a couple inches smaller than the (caseless) 27" monitor in that thing now, but the tube is going to be about 7-8" smaller and it would indeed look bad. That monitor is indeed a great replacement for a smaller cabinet that was originally equipped with a 19" monitor (Tube PC monitors lie about the size, that one will be within a fraction of an inch of tube size of a 19" arcade monitor).

I have never been all that thrilled with the video quality with Svideo but if you are going to go that way then I suggest using a video card that already has an SVideo out option, tossing a convertor into the mix would make it look worse. Also, that 32" tv almost certainly won't fit. I never owned that particular cabinet style but experience with lots of other big cabinets has shown me that they are usually only barely wider than the monitor that they shipped. Look for a 27" if you go the TV route, that should be the same size monitor that was already in there.

Thanks for the info. Well the 32" tv fell through so I wont be getting it anyway. I was able to pickup a 27" so mayebe it worked out for the best.

Ok I know it has been a while since i posted on this project. I have the control panel wired and working with Mala. My only issue is when I run a game none of my buttons work. Do I need to setup the buttons/controls within each game?

Which interface did you finally go for?  Is the ground hooked up to the buttons and interface?  What games are you running with which emulator?

The Lono2. I think I might have figured it out. I was testing it out on an old pole position game. I ended up running mame directly and configuring the buttons in mame. Haven't tested any other games because I had to stop working on it for the day.

Sound correct?

Sounds OK.  All of your other games and emulators will have to be configured for the Lono just as you configured Mame.
