Fun Spot
« on: November 08, 2012, 05:09:48 pm »
Hello guys, I have the chance to travel to USA, New York city to be more specific.
This a great chance for me to see original arcade cabinets. I'm from Spain and all we had back in the day were bootlegs, hacks, no real arcade cabinets.
I remember spanish versions of games like Galaxian or Galaga were modified and made harder so people would spend even more money, jeje. (eg. the amazing zero time)

So I was looking in the map and Fun Spot is quite far from New York. Renting a car an travelling all the way there + cold... I would have to think about.
Is there any place similar to Fun Spot near New York city by any chance?

greetings.

He's right.  I am about 2.5 hours from Funspot and I hit it with my kids several times a year.  The experience of walking in there and seeing several hundred classic games at once never gets old.  I don't think there is another place in this country quite like Funspot.

Like Xiaou2 said there is a lot of other stuff in this area too but I'm not sure either which places are only open during the summer.

I believe it will be about 5-6 hours.
I also agree that Funspot is the greatest. My family and I go up there every year and also have a great time.

There's a Barcade in Brooklyn(heard they may open one in Manhattan someday).  Here's the list of the ones at Brooklyn, about 40 games:

They reopened the arcade in Chinatown, but it turned redemption. noooooooo
I had a gift card and ended up just playing Terminator Salvation with a friend and a couple games of Centipede.  The joysticks on the fighting games were busted.  Pretty sad.

There are no "old school" arcades in Manhattan. As lordnacho1 said, the last was the Chinatown Fair, which re-opened as a particularly bad redemption-game place. The guy who owned the original Chinatown Fair opened a place way the hell out in Brooklyn that I've never been to, but from what I hear it's a modern fighting game haven, not exactly "old school."

Barcade is ok, I guess - I don't like it, personally. But, the L train is running to/from Manhattan (as are most of the trains, now) and that'll get you there. If you can't find a way to get to Funspot, Barcade is a poor, poor substitute... but you will get to see a couple dozen original cabinets.

If you're coming to the States, and you can make it up there, Funspot is *definitely* worth the time and effort. You can spend hours there not even playing the games. One of the last meccas of arcade games. There are a bunch of other things to do up there, you could make a couple of days out of it. My gf and I are planning a little jaunt up there for the spring.

I would suggest some of the locations in coastal New Jersey (the Silverball Museum, Flashbacks, etc.) but those places were the ones hit very, very hard by the storm - none of them are open as far as I know.

http://silverballmuseum.com/ <-- a couple of post-storm pictures on their site. Warning: pretty hard to look at, especially if you love pins...

This time of year it should be easier to find cheap motels.  During the summer and fall it's damn near impossible.  That place really slows down after the leaves fall.

BTW, if anyone ever wants to head there on the cheap and is a camper, I recommend the Pine Hollow Campground across the street.  I have stayed there with my kids and it's a nice quiet small campground.  This year my kids and I stayed there for the ACAM Tourney.
