Uh-oh. My IPac isn't working.
« on: October 23, 2003, 10:42:25 pm »
I use an Ipac2 USB.
My CP has been unused for a few weeks, and when I plugged it in, I got a message from Windows XP that says
"USB Device Not Recognized." This has never happenned to me before. Also, all three of the LEDs on the harness are lit up. Pushing P1B7, P1B8, and P2B7 makes their respective LED marginally brighter. Using the controls on the panel seems to have no effect on the computer its plugged into. Please help!

Try using the PS2 connection.

Are you using a USB hub or extension cables?  I've had some USB devices act flakey when connecting them with an extension cable, my DV camera for instance sometimes gives the "unrecognized" error with an extension cable.  And sometimes my USB mouse stops working when it is plugged into a hub, I just have to disconnect it and then plug it back in to be recognized.

Also check to make sure nothing is grounding out the I-PAC.  Check for loose wires or anything that may be lying against the solder side of the pcb.

It's plugged into the front of my PC. I've also tried plugging it into the back, and got the same results.

That's the underside, right? I don't see anything back there that shouldn't be.

OK this error happened to me when i accidentally tried to use the ipac with in USB mode without switching the jumper to USB.  So basically what I'm trying to say is check the USB/PS2 jumper to see if it accidentally was set incorrectly or fell off.

The jumper is definitely set to USB/Alt mode.

Now I'm not getting the error message any more. Instead, it's reporting "Unknown device is ready to use," instead of "Ipac2 is ready to use." But it still has no effect, and the WinIpac utility claims the device is not connected.

Definitely check your wiring.  I had wired my coin door up wrong (NC and NO were reversed) and my Ipac wasn't being recognized by windows either.  Once my wiring was correct, everything worked flawlessly.

I just disconnected all of my connectors except for the ones on one button, and I'm sure it's wired correctly. I still have the same problem.

Uninstall the ipac/USB drivers.

Restart machine, reinstall drivers (?)

There are no drivers to uninstall/install, AFAIK.

If you remove all the wires from the IPAC including the LED harness, does that change anything?

Also check for any components on the board getting hot while it's plugged in, or any components that look charred or blackened.

other than that...   got any candles, crosses, or canned pea soup?  Maybe you could perform an exorcism?

I got it to work again. I'm not sure how I did it, but I have a theory. My guess is that it had some invalid setting stored in memory, and after being unplugged for a while, the capacitor lost its charge, and the invalid setting faded. Then after being replugged, it re-initialized, and since the invalid setting was gone, there were no problems.

Andy, if you're reading this, you can disregard your most recent e-mail from "thecrankyhermit@hotmail.com," unless there's anything you'd like to say that you think I might find interesting or informative. In any event, consider my problem completely resolved.
