Universal joystick
« on: October 21, 2003, 03:43:56 pm »
I've done a search, but haven't found much (any really) information on the Happ Universal joystick.  How does this joystick function as a 4-way?  Is the feel pretty good?  Bob Roberts listed this joystick as a good option for Pac style games, but why don't more people use it?

I see all the Happ joysticks with the exception of the Universal.  Am I just overlooking it?

Nope, search the boards, or I think 1Up is using one on his cab.  From what I can tell, it's an okay 4-way if you can get past the plastic base plate.  Also, 1Up recommends using a lighter spring.

Sorry I've got to butt in and say this, if you are going to be playing 4 way games please get a dedicated 4 way. I am using the Pac/Galag 4 way from Happ and it rules.
Believe me if you are a fan of Pacman, Donkey Kong, Galaga etc you need this stick ( or a 4 way leaf stick I guess but that will be a bit harder to find ).

I considered that as well.  The main reason I don't want to go with it is because of having to use a mounting plate.  I'm not sure there will be enough room in the control panel before it would run into the buttons.

I have not tried it as a 4-way stick, but I can say, as a 8-way stick, it's one of the best I've ever used. Short throw, circular motion, small knob, stiff spring. It's very precise and confortable.
