Mame on an 8' screen
« on: October 20, 2003, 09:26:47 pm »
This news snippit has got me more e-mail then pretty much anything I can recall.  So I thought I might add it here in case someone else is thinking about "what my mame setup needs".

One guy wanted me to make a huge control panel that you could sit at with super-oversized controls for this :)

Projector: Panasonic PTLC55U LCD
Screen: (I dunno got it through the local school board) 8 foot X 8 foot.

Results: best game of Asteroids deluxe EVER.  Was like playing in a movie house.

Oh, and movies are kickass on it, I've had the thing for a couple of months now, and just can't get over the thing.  Indiana Jones collection out tomorrow (whoo hoo!)

The words "died and gone to heaven" come to mind.

Anyway, back to my 17" fishbowl and sidewinder control pad....

I too also have a video projector that is sitting idle in a corner of the basement collecting dust.
Unfortunately it is of the early-80s vintage, and as such, the tubes are getting a bit misty-eyed.  It's one of those "doubles as a coffee table" style projectors with about 30 different pots to adjust when you need to recalibrate.  Anyone with a projector should, in my opinion, consider hosting a drive-in movie night in their driveway.. I know I'm gonna try it out before the snow hits :)
Great for letterbox-formatted movies, those black bars at the top & bottom, well, they disappear since there is no surrounding tv :)

it's hard to find words to tell you how much I hate you.

I can't do it.

I'm not a poet.  I don't have the words.

I just hate you.

but it's only because i'm not you.

you understand I'm sure...  ;)

Did you try anything special with the audio, like echo or DSP effects?  A concert hall setting might be nice....  8)

I bought one a year ago... but a really old one..

I was going to make it into a pedistal cab.

But I never spent the money on a screen big enought (cost 10x what I got the projector for..).  and the projector I got (cheap) (the big old box ones that sit on the floor) can't focus when you get it closer then 9 feet or so...

So it ended up a non-useable for the space I had....

Now I am considering moving it on it's side that will fix a bunch of problems...

but if you think mame was fun on them... FPS show up GREAT on them... really add something to them.  I really felt after a minute that I was in the game... and started to make me feel a little...well... nausues (sp?)... a TRUE sign of a technology gone right if you think you might hurl or you feel it when you jump off a 100' cliff!

I've been known to do this too, I have a full on home theater room, HD capable CRT projector, 8 foot wide 16:9 screen, 7.1 sound etc etc, all running though a Home theater Computer / video processor / scaler.

Arcade games on the big screen rule heheh, though to be honest I still prefer standing at my cab playing.

hehe, maybe I should get a pic of my friend's place where he has a wide-format HDTV projector with dolby digital, and a hacked x-box playing Mame games with its little controllers.

Hey, you should get these for your pushbuttons in your setup!:
http://www.happcontrols.com/pushbuttons/53870100.htm
http://www.happcontrols.com/pushbuttons/954002xxxxz.htm

That Mega-Pushbutton is 2.8" diameter!

You can space them apart, and use these to push them:
http://www.happcontrols.com/amusement/acesor/51500100.htm

It would be like the exact opposite of the Mini-Mame project.  Performing a 7-hit combo in MK3 would actually require martial arts training!
