FAST Ms. Pac Man
« on: October 17, 2003, 05:05:39 pm »
I just saw a reference to this in somebody's sig and it made me think about it.  Is the fast version of Ms. Pac Man a bootleg or clone version?  If so, which one?

hmm...was that my sig?

It's something changed on the boardset ..at least on the original Pac, they hacked the board to make the speedup happen.

I know there's a chip that can be replaced on the Pac Man main board that will make it run faster.  It's just a speedup chip (probably with this modification built into a chip?)

in MAME it's considered a "cheat", so you must have cheats enabled ( I think) and then just hit tab and an option will jump out at you as speedup or something like that (not in front of the game right now)

Also, you have to hold down a button to speedup.  That way you can slow down when needed.

Allroy...it was your sig that I saw.  I played this "fast" version while I was on vacation this past summer.  I was thinking it was a clone or something called Super Pac Gal.  I'll try the cheat deal, thanks for the insight!

There is also another ROM set for "Champion Edition" Ms Pacman...
It's really fast!!!
I think it's a bootleg though... It has hearts instead of dots.

I recently played a Ms Pac w/ the speed up chip installed too...
There was no button, just a lightning fast Ms Pac...

It's just a Rom chip that you can replace on the PCB...

I bet if you knew which ROM it was you might be able to replace the ROM file in the MsPac zip & have a really fast MsPac... (Just a thought)

Actually, tmasman is correct.
On the original Pac boards (Pac & Ms.), the speedup was achieved by replacing the 6F rom chip.

There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers what the universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable.

I should have clarified--you have to hold a button in MAME to speed up.  The cheat exists on Pac and Ms Pac.  I've also seen hacked originals in an arcade and a car wash where they added a "turbo" button to the CP of both games.

Ok, now I've got another question.  I can find the "Speed Cheat" in the options menu in mame, but it acts like I need to assign a button to it.  For some reason though, I can't assign a button to it.  Am I totally missing something here?  It's probably something totally easy I'm overlooking!  I'm really good at that!  :P

I tried the cheat recently, but found it's just that. I wanted all gameplay to be sped up, not the ability to go much faster than the ghosts. :(

So is there no way to play the sped up version of Ms. Pac Man in Mame?  Not where you can outrun the ghosts, but overall speed increase in the gameplay.  ???

For Mame .76, press the 'Tab' key and then go down to 'Input (this game)' and hit 'Enter'.  The key for the Speed-Up Cheat is the last one in the list.  Go down to it and hit 'Enter'.  Now press whatever key you wish it changed to.  It is 'Left-Ctrl Or Mouse Button 0' by default.  If you have problems doing this procedure go into the cfg subdirectory in the Mame directory and delete the mspacman.cfg file.

alright, alright...
I finally went and fired up Ms. Pac on my cabinet tonight (I don't like to do that, because then I make my real Ms. Pac cab feel bad about herself) to figure out how to do it again.
it's very easy, and i'm not sure cheats have to be on.
it's a DIP SWITCH

so tab, dip switches, speedup cheat  ON/OFF, you would want it ON.  duh

Anyway, hope this settles it.

Allroy, personally I prefer pressing the 'Left-Ctrl' button to turn the speed on when I need it instead of having the speed on all the time and having to press the 'Left-Ctrl' button to have normal speed Ms. Pac-Man but to each their own.

I don't think I ever saw one in an arcade like that though, did you?

I've always perfered the fast Pacs...but I know a lot of people have control issues with the fast version.

More to the point, I've got no in either the dipswitch or the button cheat (again, it doesn't speed up gameplay, it just speeds you up and makes the game really, really easy). No way to just speed up the whole game, then?

I saw a Ms. Pac with a turbo button on it at the skating rink I used to go to as a kid.  It was during the time when the  games I remember being there were altered beast and rampart.... i think.  So we're talking early 90s?  yikes...  i hope i wasn't in a skating rink in the early 90s.

/hides head in shame.
