GOT A FREE 25" MONITOR TODAY!!! Just needs a little fixin up...
« on: October 16, 2003, 12:03:32 am »
Hey guys, today my friend called me up and told me that the arcade he worked at was throwing away the monitor that was on the MK4 machine. They were gonna use it with the Tekken 4 board but the monitor was kinda broken. I went and picked it up though.

It seems that the green I think on the monitor is gone, faded or something like that. I mean when they used it with the MK4 board it looked like the color was smearing. Is there a way to fix this or do I have to just live with it? BTW, when they had the monitor with the MK4 board it was a conversion that they did so it is a standard monitor I am pretty sure, how do I tell? Thanx.

-See Ya!!!

EDIT: It's a Midway, id # 40029 031555

Great catch!  There are a couple things you could do (like a buy a cap kit for it).  But first you'd probably want to try hooking it up to a realiable rgb video source to see exactly whats wrong.  Then post your findings/problems in the "Monitor/Video" forum.

Well... it probably didn't work because MK4 used a standard resoultion monitor and Tekken 4 uses a medium resolution monitor.

Sounds like you scored yourself a nice deal!  ;D

KLOV lists MK4 as using a standard res. and Tekken 4 using medium res.

MK4: http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=M&game_id=8755

Tekken 4: http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=T&game_id=10062

So your monitor is a standard res. monitor that probably just needs a cap kit to clean up the image (as Dave_K mentioned).

OH NICE (Angels sing). Ok now all I need is this damn cap kit. Also, is there a converter or something that will let me convert the power cord of the monitor to plug into my wall socket? If there was then I could post pics of the monitor in action... just as soon as I get my scan converter, I hope it's on my door step today. That would be so ill. Thanx.

-See Ya!!!

Don't buy a cap kit until you first understand whats wrong with the monitor.  Second thing about the cap kit is that you will have to be quite good at soldering actually install it (or find someone to do it for you).

About the power, this is another gotcha.  You can't simply plug it into the wall socket.  You need an isolation transformer (usually found at the bottom of an arcade cabinet).  Otherwise you will blow a couple fuses (and probably the horizontal transistor) if you try to plug it directly into the wall.

Sorry, still a ways to go...

You might *not* need an isolation transformer.  I know for a fact that the newer WG monitors can plug straight into the wall.  You should definitely check out the manual (or schematic if you can read one) before you take this to mean that your monitor doesn't need one, however.  However if there's no isolation transformer in the MK4 cabinet, I think you can safely assume that you don't need one.
