Non-fighting games that use 5+ buttons?

I am planning my CP layout and I am kind of limited on space and I am going with a NeoGeo'ish theme with Metal Slug for the cab.  The CP is a bit narrower than I like, but it is what I have since I am using a Dynamo cabinet.  I am not a big fighting game fan and what ones I do play I plan to just use the NeoGeo 4 button versions.  I am trying to squeeze a 2 1/4" trackball in there as I don't have the space on my vertical cabinet.  With that said, are there any other must play classic arcade games that require more than 4 buttons per player that you like?  The only ones I can think of off hand are the Asteroid series of games and Defender.   Both of which could have the left and right buttons mapped to the joystick, so that isn't an issue.  Toobin' is one, but again it could be 'faked' with a 4 button layout no more than I would play it.

Anything else?

The 4 button neo geo button layout actually requires more room than the streetfighter layout does.
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

Ya I know, i guess I didn't explain that correctly.  I am kind of replicating the look of a Neo-Geo CP with the graphics and everything and using a NeoGeo button layout takes more room.  Adding two more button makes it look all wonky so most people go with a 7 button layout to accomodate both styles, which I am trying to avoid.

Anyways, the original question is still valid.

You can look for a dynamo CPs that has a wood top & more space. This is my early testing CP on a Dynamo HS 5 where I checked if I would ever use 8 buttons with an Xbox in the cab.  I didn't.

Defender has 5 buttons: Reverse, Hyperspace, Smart Bomb, Thrust, Fire.

If you're not worried about the fighting games, you'll be fine with four.
I've seen a lot of small bartops with them in a diamond pattern, but never tried it myself.

Defender has 5 buttons: Reverse, Hyperspace, Smart Bomb, Thrust, Fire.

Stargate uses all of the above plus Inviso.

You do know that Defender and Stargate used a 2-way vertical joystick and a reverse button instead of right/left controls, correct?

Theoretically, you could map joystick right and left to reverse and another function, but it seems like there would be a pretty steep learning curve to it and a high probability of messing up on the reverse and second joystick function.   :banghead:

Has anyone ever made a hacked version that uses an 8-way stick for direction and thrust and 4 buttons for Fire, Hyperspace, Smart Bomb, and Inviso?

Some people remedy this by using right joystick ad thrust and left joystick as reverse. It's not ideal, but it can get you by if you only have 3 buttons.

I have played Defender quite a bit with a 3 button setup and I have had no issues.  I actually find it easier to play than on a dedicated cab.  It isn't a favorite of mine so it isn't a big deal.

Guess I can scratch the plans for that dedicated standalone panel build.

Shadow force has six though I doubt many would classify it as "must play " Daioh on the other hand ...

I'd just map the bombs to a combination of other buttons.
1+2=5
3+4=6
.....or something to that effect.

Gravitar is a favorite of mine that is 5 button.

Are you considering Space Duel as Asteroids family?

Some others with similar controls, but are 4 button, I'll mention as you might want to also consider for your button layout include Rip Off, Star Castle and Armor Attack.  (They'd probably be tough in a diamond pattern)

I haven't tried Gravitar but Space Duel is really easy by mapping the rotation to left and right on the joystick.

Oh, sure, you could map left/right to a joystick for most of the games I mentioned.  Sounds like you're asking about non-fighting games that require 5 or more buttons PLUS a joystick.  Probably not too many of those.
