Cocktail control panel advice
« on: October 14, 2012, 01:33:52 am »
Hoping I can get some input on my cocktail cabinet control panels. I am trying to decide if I should go with:
1. A joystick and 3 buttons for each player.
2. A joystick, 3 buttons and a trackball for each player.
3. A joystick, 3 buttons and a spinner for each player.
4. A joystick, 3 buttons and a trackball for player 1. A joystick, 3 buttons and a spinner for player 2.

Option 1 covers all the most common vertical games and would also allow me to play some 2 player simultaneous horizontal games in split screen mode like Mario Bros.

Option 2 would be the same but also add in Centipede/Millipede, Marble Madness split screen.

Option 3 would be vertical games plus spinner games like Tempest, Arknoid, Pong, etc. I could also add in some 2 player racing games like Super Sprint, Ivan Stewart Off Road, etc.

Option 4 would be a combination that would allow me to play the  most games, but trackball and spinner games would all be single player.

Let me know what you think. Pros and cons and if any of you have done any of these configurations on your own cocktails.

I have #1.  this is entirely because I have an old galaga machine and the CPs are nowhere big enough to add extra things like that.
At no time have I ever had a party where someone said, "man, this would be great if only we could play marble madness!"

The hundreds of games you're going to get from just #1 alone will keep you busy for years to come.  I also have extra CPs that I can swap in and out fairly easily if I want other games to play.

#1 is also the cheapest...

I have joystick and 4 buttons + spinner for each player, plus 2 admin buttons, and have been very happy with this setup.  The sticks are magstick+ that let you switch to 4-way or 8-way from the top.  Since mame can run horizontal games in 'cocktail' video mode, mirroring the screen for both players, plenty of 4 button Neo games and such (like the D&D games) can be played.  The 4th button also acts as shift so it + the coin button pauses the game and it + start button exits the game.

The spinners are great for 2 player simultaneous Warlords, Sprint, Offroad, Off the Wall, Blasteroids, and a few others in addition to true vertical cocktail flipping games that use spinners like Tempest and Kick.  Spinners take up very little space, but are expensive.  Despite the cost, I personally am very glad I put two spinners in since they get used all the time.

Popsicle,

So it looks like you went joystick. 4 buttons and a spinner. I have the bigger control panels but they are not that big.

What does having 4 buttons gain you?  Neil Geo games?  What games do you play with the spinners?

My preference is to keep it simple. Joystick and three buttons. Keeps things clean and you can have a narrower CP which equals way more comfort. Don't underestimate the value of ergonomics. Unless you really love playing arkanoid, centipede, missile command, etc... then trackball adds the most flexibility, but way too big for a cocktail IMHO.
