There are 3 pots on my HangOn steering assembly.  Each of the 3 pots have three wires coming from them.   I connected the throttle pot from the hangOn steering assembly to a  MS Sidewinder USB Dual Strike hack pot input and tested that the pot in fact does register via the "Game Controllers" icon in the "My Computer" section of my computer and it did.   Moving the throttle on the assembly results in the little cursor (in the test controller's window) to move to the right and then when I release the throttle the cursor goes back to the center starting position.

Anyway, I then started Mame32 and brought up HangOn and hit TAB and selected "Input for this game" to try and see if I could assign my throttle POT from my steering assembly into the game settings and I found out I had no idea what I am doing.

HangOn has 3 pots total (left/right pot, throttle pot and brake pot).   The settings for the game in Mame show the following:

"AD Stick X"
"AD Stick X"
"AD Stick Y"
"AD Stick Y"
"AD Stick Y2"
"AD Stick Y2"

I went to "AD Stick X" and hit "ENTER" then turned the throttle on my assembly and nothing happened.   I went to each of the AD Stick settings listed above and did the same thing and nothing happened.

What am I doing wrong and how do I configure Mame to use my HangOn steering assembly?

Don't pause mame when you redefine the keys.  :)  Also make sure it's plugged in before you startup mame.

I did not pause the game.   The intro screens with the motorcycle moving around is in the background while I was trying to adjust the "Input for this game" settings.

Also, it the Dual Strike was plugged in prior to boot up.

Any other ideas?

I have not tried this.. but Super Hangon may still be partially broken in mame.  Try to set the controller to work with other non sega analog games, and see if that works.

The other thing that may be a prob is that the distance the pot travels isnt enough for mame to utilize.   This might have to be solved via a different gearing...

Also try adjusting the pot til you find the spot where it registers in mame.  Sometimes the full spectrum isnt supported... and or your pot might just be problematic in certain areas as they do wear down with time.

I am trying to configure "HangOn" not "Super HangOn", but it most likely is the same problem with either game.   I will try playing around with the pots and try to get them to register full motion somehow, although the throttle and brake only move the pot in one direction (ie: basically you can not apply negative throttle or negative brake).

I will also try the steering left/right pot next time as well, which actual moves the pot in both directions (+ and -).

What should I see when I configure the "AD Stick X" setting?   I mean what "value" should I see appear in the configuration menu for "AD Stick X" when I move my pot?

OK, I figured it out.....

I did not have the "Joystick enabled" option selected.  Once I enabled this option then Mame automatically recognized my left/right pot.  I did not even have to (or was even allowed to ... for that matter) set the "AD Stick X" setting manually.  This seems to be because the left/right pot was the only Xaxis pot connected at the time so Mame simply uses that one to be "AD Stick X".   Anyway, when I connected my throttle Y-axis pot, then Mame automatically used this pot for the "AD Stick Y" setting.  I still did not have to (or was even allowed to ... for that matter) set the "AD stick Y" setting myself since the throttle pot was the only "Y-axis" pot connected.

However, when I connected my second Dual Strike (this is where the brake pot Y-axis was connected), then Mame must have recognized there was now 2 Y-axis pots connected and then allowed me to specify which Y-axis pot (throttle or brake) to use for the "AD Stick Y" and "AD stick Y2 settings.

My original problem (causing me to open this thread) was because I was only connecting one pot at a time to test whether Mame would allow me to assign a pot to a particular "AD Stick X" or "AD Stick Y" setting.   But since Mame does not allow manual configuration of the "AD Stick" settings when only one pot is connected of a particular axis type, then I thought I was not doing something correctly.  I thought my HangOn assembly was not being recognized......

Anyway, the world is now good once again and I can continue wiring up my driving cab ....
