High Score Competition Replay #1: Shinobi

High Score Competition Replay #1. Shinobi

With over 4 years and 100 titles of high score competions many titles have been exhausted, and many people have missed their chance to compete on their favorite title. The High Score Competition Replay is a fun way to give people another shot at those contests they missed while other members are actively doing the same thing (rather than just trying to beat the score on the BYOAC High Game Scoreboard).

Contest winner recieves nothing but bragging rights (and possibly a spot on the BYOAC High Game Scoreboard if the score is high enough). Previous title champions are encouraged to post a score, but will not be eligible to win the new contest.

The replay competition uses the same titles as the normal competition, in the same order. Each contest begins on a sunday morning and runs two weeks ending on a saturday evening.

Original Contest: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,83244.0.html
Original Title Champion: Destructor

- One credit only!

- No continues or adding credits!

- No MAME cheats!

- Last day is Saturday October 6th (11:59:59pm Central Time), 2012. Next title up is Jungle Hunt.

- High score wins.

- No savestates, savestate practices, etc. during the round.

- MAME INP recordings are encouraged but optional.

- A screenshot is required to enter a score (press F12 to save screenshot showing your final score) or take a photo of the game screen.

- If you're a MARP competitor on this title, keep in mind this is just a friendly competition among forum members, so maybe you shouldn't enter. However, if you're a forum member and this is a game you're good at and nobody knows about it, this is your time to shine!

- Even if you don't have a competitive score or if you don't *think* that you have a competitive score, please post it anyway to keep the thread fun & to give everybody a good sense of score ranges.

- Please make sure your scores are from games that take place during the competition period (no posting your best score from last year, etc.).

- Use of autofire or other non-standard hacks within MAME or your PC's OS are not allowed.  No program or other person or entity of any sort may manipulate your controls during your game.  Coaching & back-seat driving is fine as long as the party doesn't directly influence the game or controls.

- If you can beat any of the high scores from the previous competitions, you can submit your score to the BYOAC High Game Scoreboard.

Good luck!

Wow. It took me 30 games just to beat the first boss. Of course I had never played the game before either.

Somewhat surprising... considering you have owned 250 games... and never played Shinobi?

Great game.  Very difficult in the latter rounds.   Satisfying, yet nearly impossible.. to score 100% on the bonus rounds.  The Ninja Magic you can get, is very handy, if you can somehow master the bonus stages.

Revenge of Shinobi, for Sega Genesis, was a good game as well.  Very fun, with a great sound track to boot.
Though admittedly, a little too easy.  A Lot easier than the coin op original.

None of the other Shinobi games in the series, played as good as those two.   I believe Ive played most of them.

Only way to beat shinobi is to set the game to freeplay.. otherwise the game does not let you continue after you get to a certain point and the game just gets super impossible at that point.

Not really, just have to remember the "spawn points" of the ninjas later.

I definitely never owned Shinobi or a Shinobi board. I am sure I had played a couple single games of it here and there, but I had never really PLAYED it.

Great initiative! Now, if only a game I actually like would be chosen. :) Shinobi is great, but I really don't like the bonus rounds and you really need to know what's coming or you're toast.

False. I've seen a guy no-miss the entire game.

but I really don't like the bonus rounds

What?!   Ohh man, that was one of my Favorite parts...  throwing mass Shrikens at Ninjas!  :D
I almost always fail... but its really fun trying.

The thing to remember on the Bonus stage... is that there is a delay between fire and hitting, because of the far depth of travel.  So, send rapidfire sweeps across an area ahead of the Ninjas... and usually it will end up hitting them.  Dont wait, and dont 're-sweep', unless maybe in 2 secs your sweep actually failed.  If you try to pinpoint them... and or wait for things to hit... you will waste too much time,  and lose to the rest of the swarm. Even if you miss a few.. you usually get a 2nd or even 3rd shot at a sweeping them up.

Quote
you really need to know what's coming or you're toast

This is Definitely one of the biggest challenge of Shinobi.  Move only in small increments, especially in the latter stages... or you will trigger too many Ninjas to attack.   By triggering only one or two, you can usually do ok against them.  But try to rush too far... and 4 to 6 ninjas will be on the screen at once, slashing you to bits.

Even if you memorize the spots... its often easy to have a memory lapse... or make a mistake because your trying to rush things.   Still, even while frustrating at times... its good fun.  Def. less frustration than Ghouls and Ghosts... but they are pretty close..  and G&G is a bit more graphically exceptional... which eggs you on.
Older Sega arcade games tend to reuse a lot of graphics... making things drone on a bit.

The best is when you collect several children in a row without getting hit... and you actually power up your weapons.

You can also often jump on certain characters, without then hurting you.  It can help at times.

Fire ahead often... even if you dont see anything.

Use Ninja Magic in tough spots, such as a bunker of enemies grouped together... Unless you are really good at getting past them.  Then you can save it for the bosses.

The worse boss is probably the spinning Idols.  OMG its difficult.  I think its often mere luck that Ive beaten it.
(and Ive totally forgotten how by now)

Im not sure if Ive ever fully beat Shinobi.   I had the Sega Master system version beaten... but that had far less levels.

Revenge of Shinobi is awesome (",)

I do agree :D

Should have and could have actually been an Arcade game.  A Really well made game.
I guess it probably was easy to me... cause I used the Infinite Shriken trick.  Totally forgot about that.
Without that trick... the difficulty is probably decent.  But still.. its not as quickly unforgiving, as Shinobi.

Well at least you know what games are coming up next. If you aren't getting anywhere on this title you can just start practicing the next one.

Shinobi is more about memory than anything else.    Once you have learned the hard way, about when and where things are.. you can usually defeat them pretty easily... unless you make some careless sloppy mistakes.

Ghouls and Ghosts however, is a lot less forgiving.    The enemies in G&G have like 3 or more different patterns.  This includes spawn places, Timing's, Time & place when they fire...etc.  And patterns are chosen at random.

Couple this with the enemies own AI taking over,  ...and you have some of the craziest and most frustrating things that can and Do happen to you.

By Comparison, Shinobi is a Cake-Walk.   It doesnt even make you play the entire game over again to win it... as does G&G.  Ohh man, that was a kick in the jewels!   :lol

I've gotten Perfect on the first bonus stage, and am not a seasoned player. I think I had a somewhat special round, but it isn't that hard.

I get real tired of the 'get hit once, start over' thing, which keeps me away from the game. But I'll give it a go.

I remember seeing that at the local pizza joint. It turned away a lot of people. But it may have made up for it in those it seduced.

So here's a typical Shinobi score for me. Passed the first round unscathed (sucked ass at bonus round), and then couldn't even pass the first section of mission 2. Ehh.

A little better, though still blew the first section of mission 2. Got a perfect bonus stage. This was only my second game, so I should be able to do a bit better. Unless I burn out...

I'm sort of surprised they don't allow you some bonus points or something in hitting the boss in its weak spot, when you see it pre-boss screen. That would be cool.

Sort of better, in that I got farther and got perfect bonus round again, but died stupidly twice on the first boss. I'm taking a break now.

Buy this:

and bring that & the Shinobi over to my house.  That'd look great in my candy cab...   >:D

* sold to me as working
